Computer Problem

Computer is running very slow and some things don't seem to be functioning properly, like the Search program for Windows XP, which opens up but is blank.

You are overly infected with MYWEBSEARCH. Please do the following.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Then please provide an uninstall list using hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save and save the list, then copy and paste the log back here.

So when coming back please give malwarebytes log, new hijackthis log and the uninstall log.

It seems to be going a bit faster now but still sometimes slow. I don't know if this is related to the infection, but the Search program still doesn't work (it starts up but is empty) and when I try to open the McAfee SecurityCenter, it just shows the watermark start-up screen (that says "McAfee") for a few seconds and nothing opens (is it supposed to do that?). Then click on fix checked at the bottom. It looks like your Mcafee needs to be reinstalled as it seems its corrupted with all the missing file entries in hijackthis.

However, I would highly recommend uninstall Mcafee totally and downloading a free virus program such as AVG, AVIRA, or AVAST. They work just as well and they won't hog up system resources like Mcafee does.

If you feel you are still infected, we can run combofix to see if there is anything hidden that may be causeing issues.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

• Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

I tried to uninstall Ask.com Toolbar but this is what happened. I closed those windows and this poped up, I closed that too and the program did not uninstall. I also tried to uninstall McAfee but this is all that happens and I can't uninstall it. Also, when I open up the Search program, this happens.

Try downloading and running Mcafee's removal tool.

However, to get the search function back you may need to do a repair install of windows.

Other than what I mentioned, everything else seems to be working fine. What should I do about the Ask.com Toolbar, Should I just leave it? Is everything fine with the logs?

Did you uninstall the inbox toolbar? The hijackthis entries are still there. As far as uninstalling the ask software its just a matter of using hijackthis to remove the entry from add/remove and then search for ask in your system and delete it.

Rerun hijackthis and place a check next to these entries since it won't uninstall.

then click on fix checked.

Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager. Highlight any entry that has ask in it and click on delete entry.

Or you could actually reinstall the ask software and then uninstall it. But make sure you run malware scans afterward.

I tried to remove Ask.com Toolbar but it's still in the Add/ Remove Programs, but only this time there is no "Repair/ Remove" button. I removed the inbox toolbar. Why do I have to remove these programs, are they corrupt?

Since you have uninstalled it, the entries are still there. So please rerun hijackthis and place a check next to the following entries.

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

You may want to think about reinstalling windows or at least try a repair install if you continue to have issues.

Free up disk space. A hard drive that is close to being full will drastically slow down your computer. You can clear up space by deleting temporary internet files, empty your recycle bin, remove programs that you do not use, put important files on an external hard drive.

Another way to free up disk space is to use "Disk Cleanup" on your Windows PC. To do this, click "start" and go to "Accessories", go to "System Tools", and click "Disk Cleanup".

Scan for Viruses, Adware, and Spyware. These nasty programs can slow down your computer worse than anything. I would recommend purchasing software that can remove all three of these common problems.

Don't automatically start up programs when you turn your computer on. Close any programs that you do not use that open when you start up your computer. These programs will run in the background and steal RAM (Random Access Memory).

Defragment your hard drive. Defragging your hard drive places all of your information for each file in one place.
