Hi Im new to this forum and wondering if anyone can help, i have a home built PC done by a friend who is a IT engineer, computer info duel core pentium d processor, its got 3 gig of memory 1 tb of hard disk space split into two drives of 500gb running windows xp media centre, now before anyone asks to change to windows 7 one i dont want to and two a lot of my programmes will not run on the new versions and i have not got the money to go and buy new programmes just setting the picture.

Its worked fine, over the past years no probs, then things went wrong and had to reinstall the OS, ok thought everything was ok but the sound dissapeared, now this is hard to explain so ill try when i say sound, the realteck HD audio sound is working whats stopped working is the windows sounds the startup and shutdowns sounds etc, i can play music and that ok but windows sounds dissapeared. now i tried a download but that stopped all sound working , so i reinstalled the OS again, came on all sound working after a bit the windows sound stopped again now even my friend who built this computer cant find why is is doing this, the chipset in case you need this is gigabyte intel 945p express chipset GA-81945P Pro not sure if this will help but if anyone can guide me on what to try i would be extremly grateful oh and in my device manager i have a yellow question mark saying sm bus controller anyway probably bored you by now thanks in advance.

Oh and im also getting the blue screen of death every so often says something like gr-krnlcrash log something memory dump !!

Try running HDtune to check for hard disk errors:

Download the free version. Then run the full scan (not the quick one, it never finds everything) on both your drives. It will take a few hours to do both drives, but if it finds a bad sector, then you're going to want to get a new hard drive (or just use one of your drives, if one of them has no bad sectors.)
 
Did you check if it turned off the windows sounds?

Start - Control Panel - Sounds and then look in there.

You will see a list with 'startup', 'error', 'shutdown' etc. I bet you somehow turn it off manually by accident. Maybe a certain hotkey combo or w/e.

I doubt your driver conflict in regard to the bus controller has anything to do with it as you can play music etc.

btw you can use XP Mode under Windows 7 allowing you to run all your Windows XP programs. It's a shame you use such an old OS on such a nice machine.

It is a beautiful machine its been brilliant, just cant understand this, i did not know you had an xp mode under windows 7 to be honest i dont know much about windows 7 as got a lot of programs that are xp so never thought of it i must admit i have not got the money at the mo but maybe in time i may try windows 7 if i can get my xp prorammes working in it i like the media side in windows media centre as do a lot of photos and video if you know what i mean, i appriciate all the replys here , just wish i could get my machine back to normal but im going to give a few of these suggestiolns a go cheers

Don't worry about Windows 7 too much. I still have XP on all my machines, including a desktop with a Core 2 Quad Q9650 and a 1tb Samsung Spinpoint F3. I've tried Windows 7 on other computers, and it's nice, but not 100% necessary. By 2015, we'll all have to upgrade to Win7, because Microsoft will no longer make updates for XP, but for now, it's not crucial.
