Computer Problem

I recently purchased a 300 gigabyte external hard-drive for an old computer. Ever since I connected it when i start up my computer it gets to the windows log in screen. Then my mouse and keyboard are both non-responsive and i can not do anything. Does anybody know how I can fix this problem? Any help is appreciated.

Seeing as it's external, what happens when it's say not running or disconnected. Does it work? Does it boot then the drive work if you connect/power it up after windows boots?

My dad has a problem with his machine where it won't even get by counting RAM if he has a flash drive connected. Some computers just seem picky about this stuff...

When i disconnect it, the mouse and keyboard still do not seem to work.

Could you further specify a solution to this problem. Also, is it possible that the external hard drive is putting too much strain on th epower supply?

I'm suprised the hard drive doesn't have it's own power source, but what I think The_Other_One is talking about, is that you may have to disconnect the hard drive for booting up, and connect it after widows is started. Try that. I know it's annoying, but it may be the only way you'll beable to get your system to start normally.

I had the same problem when I bought my external hard-drive. The drive with the OS, will have to boot first, and then you can turn on to activate your external hard-drive. When you turn on the computer and the external hard-drive is plugged in your computer wants to boot through that drive. Seeing how that drive has no OS installed you get an error.
