Computer problem

I think I might have a motherboard problem.

When I turn on my computer, it cycles on and off and never starts.

So, I tried booting with the windows CD and got a message saying that windows failed to start because of a problem with my computer.

Could I have a worn out motherboard?

The reason I suspect this is the power supply is new and the guy who replaced it said my motherboard may not last very much longer.

Could it be the video card? Sometimes I would get a message that the video card was slowing down because of heat.

Thanks.

If the board is a year old or longer one thing to consider before assuming a hardware fault like a bad board is the battery on it. When a battery goes the system will fail to start up. That maintains the cmos information. If a video card goes bad you will usually hear a single long beep followed by two short audio beeps from the board's speaker if there's one.

The heat warning about the card was seen while the system was running. Sometime a card will go while the system still seems to boot normal. If you have a compact mid tower case with only one 80mm rear exhaust anything could heat up. You may need a larger vpu cooler if you are running one of the newer models out.

It thought: When an battery goes out you get an message at POST that the CMOS failed and everything was set to default?

Is the power supply even sufficient enough for the system? You cant have an E6600 running off an 300W..

 No I meant that when you shutdown your computer and turned it back on with the power cord in you wont get the error message (without the batt that is)

Have you tried it lately? On any case seen here where a battery went the system wouldn't even turn on. And that's with the supply plugged in. Once the battery was replaced everything ran normal after re-entering the time and date information all over again.

I never had one that would not boot with a dead battery, it would only reset to default, the battery is just to keep the setting while the power is off.

That will depend on board manufacturer as well as board type there. The last build saw nothing one day after a year of use. No power or anything one day. Drop a new battery in and whamo! everything fires right up. The time and date screen first and then onto Windows. Some boards are particular on this like Asus for sure.
