Computer Problems - Weird

Here's the deal, I have a older computer (Pentium 3, 600Mhz, 20GB Hard drive, XP Pro SP2, 192MB Ram), it ran okay, but I formated it (it ran windows Me before), I wanted Xp on it. So it works fine for a while, but now it is messed. It loads up all fine, but after using it for about 2 minutes, you can click a program like Firefox (just an example it does this with all programs) and it will just sit and do nothing, but if you come back in about a minute, it will be there, and it will work with no problems. It is not spyware virus releated, I have checked. I want this thing to work :( .

Any ideas,
Jbrown

That's typical. You will find that common on older systems. Try 98SE on an old 486 with 32mb of ram. It will run ssslllooowww and load anything ssslowlyyy. There's a few things to try out link reducing the number of things that load along with Windows, adding more memory, using the defragmenter to have the Windows system tool organize the drive for faster read access, and run the system file checker to verify the installatio as well as repair or replace any needed files found damaged or missing.

To run the system file checker type in "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt off of the Start menu. You will most likely see the prompt asking for the installation disk in order to verify system files as well as perform any repairs or replacements of system files. The disk defragmenter is found in accessories\system tools off of the Programs menu usually seen at the top.

The thing that will see the best improvement would be to increase the amount of installed memory from what a 128mb and 64mb pair of simms? to a pair of 256mb modules. This will have an effect on the overall system performance there. PC133 memory is still available at this time depending on whether the system there runs that or PC100. Review the specifications found on the make and model system board for this information.

Thanks man, just wondering tho, I think that the 128 stick in it is 133 and the 2 32's are 100's, should i take out the 100's (the motherboard runs at 133).

OUCH! You mixed memory there? If the system runs with the PC133 alone then get more of that to increase the ram. Your board probably takes upto three 256mb PC133s giving a total of 768mb for memory. The thing now is to look up the specifications on the board itself. What is the make and model?

I just got the thing, I didn't install any of the memory. The board is made by Soyo, thats all I know.

Thanks for the help,
Jbrown

Now that's kind of funny. The first custom built here ran a Soyo board with an AMD K5 500mhz cpu with two 256mb PC100 PNY simms. The next build moved into PC133. Too bad you didn't have the model number. But that's an old discontinued model at this late date.
