computer problems

I have a Gateway running WinXP Pro SP2 that was recently given to me, but i've run into a few problems. When I start the computer, it says "Ultra100 BIOS not installed", but the BIOS has to be there or else the computer wouldn't make it to the welcome screen. Also, I can't access the BIOS. Maybe I'm not using the right key?

Of course, then there's the fact that the person before me didn't erase their password, so I'm locked out. I tried a few Linux password recovery programs, but they don't seem to run. A friend told me to check the BIOS and make sure the CD drive was before the HDD, but, again, I can't get to the BIOS. I've been thinking that it might be easier to reinstall WinXP, but i only want to do that if I absolutely have to.

Any ideas? :(

Try replacing the battery on the board. Since you will also clear the cmos as well as see a fresh battery go in on a used system you can then proceed to update the bios by the floppy method if needed if you still can't enter the bios setup. Reinstalling Windows won't correct any bios problems.

Can i clear the CMOS without putting in a fresh battery? And would you happen to know the key to get into the BIOS, just to check if I've been right or wrong?

Simply removing the battery for about 30 seconds will see the cmos cleared. The user manual for the system itself will show whether or not you have to move a jumper on the board over one pin and back as part of doing that.

On most board simply pressing the DEL or as seen on the first post screen the assigned F key like F1, F4, F12 whatever that is. The manual will show that as well since the first thing that comes once you clear the cmos is the first bios setup screen for entering time and date all over again.

Ok i do not know what you can do without reinstalling windows xp do you have an administrator password it is windows xp pro yes it is so try getting into administrator.

On some motherboards, there is a jumper than you can short to reset the CMOS. However, removing the battery is a much more efficient way IMO.
