computer randomly freezes and crashes

I built myself a new computer. Everything seems to be working fine, but it will sometimes freeze at random times or just crash. Now when it freezes, it just stops. I have to hold down the power button to get it to turn off and then reboot it again. Sometimes, the computer will just restart itself. This can be at anytime, too. It happened once when during Windows Automatic Updates, and it happened another time when I was extracting a file. What do you guys suggest I do to fix this?
 
It could be lots of things... If you have another power supply, I'd give it a shot. Maybe try running a single stick of RAM or run Memtest. Any drivers that can be updated, try doing that. Oh, and rightclick on my computer, go to manage, and find Event Viewer. See if you can find any error when the computer last locked up or reset.
 
There's a bunch of errors in the system part in Event Viewer. I also got a few firefox application errors, too. I installed all my drivers yesterday from the CDs, so I don't think there's a problem with that. Question: Why would running one stick of memory make any difference? Could the problem possibly be with any lose connections in the case?
 
Loose connections are possible, but to me thats not the problem. I agree with The_Other_One on the RAM part. Running one stick of ram will slow your computer down. For example, if your system has 2x 512MB sticks, take one out. if it still crashes then take that stick out and put the other stick in.
 
Okay, I took one stick of RAM out. While I was transferring data from one hard drive to another, the computer froze in the middle of the transfer. So then I took that stick out and put the other in. The computer restarted itself again. I do sometimes get a message, "The system has recovered from a serious error."
I checked for loose connections, and everything seemed to be fine. I do know that my hard drive bay is right up against the power supply fan. It's literally 2mm away from the power supply fan. Maybe that's what's causing it? Just a thought since I do not know what else may be causing it. Any ideas?
 
You will get that message if your computer froze on the other piece of RAM and you restartedyour computer. Did you get any freezes/restarts on the second stick of RAM? If so, both pieces are proably bad, if not, then first piece is probably shot.
 
Got my new RAM today. I installed it in and began transferring my data from my external HDD to the one in the computer. The same thing happened again. The system crashed and restarted itself. So I took one stick out and tried again. Same thing happens again. What can I do?
