Computer randomly reboots.

Hello all.

This is still the same issue that I have had for ages now, but thought it was fixed.

I initially had a problem of the Computer locking up and having to reboot. There were no Viruses on the Machine. I had a lot of help on the Forum but couldn't nail the problem down.

I eventually took it into Work and let a Colleague have a play with it.

When he gave me the Machine back, he said that the problem had been a mis-match of Memory in the slots. He said that the Slots had to have paired Memory in the Slots. I had 1GB in Slot 1 and 500MB in Slot 2. I now have just the 1GB in Slot 1 and nothing in Slot 2

The Machine worked fine for a couple of weeks and then just started playing up again. Now when it just decides to reboot a picture of the Mother Board is dispayed on the Screen P4 V 8000-X with options to Press DEL to enter Setup or Press tab to enter Message Bios.

Also, once I have the Machine rebooted, if I move the Mouse over the Start Button and click, it locks up again.

I am now getting the impression that there is some kind of bad connection causing the problem, but not sure where to start. I have tried pressing all the connections I can see, to no avail.

I have now refitted the 500MB to Slot 2 because I think that that was a bit of a Red Herring. These problems are present with either 1 or 2 Memory Cards present.

Any more suggestions, or do I bin it!

Steve.

Do you have an anti static brush or some canned air? clean out the memory slots and check the connections to make sure everything si where it should be.

Probably a different issue but are you certain it's hardware related. I had a similar problem where the cursor would turn into a "hand" icon (like hovering over a link) and freeze, the only recourse was to re-boot. Mine was only cured by a re-install, so looked to be OS related.
