4 months ago i had a computer built for me by a collegue. Every so often it will reset itself and when it returns to the start screen it says it has just recovered from a serious error caused by an unknown driver. i read on a different forum that it could be something to do with my motherboard and bios. My motherboard is a Gigabyte k8vt800 with an AMD sempron 3000+ processor. i will be grateful for any help as to how to stop this happening as it is becoming rather annoying.

It could be one of a few things there. If you temps are running high you can use a freeware know as SpeedFan to monitor those. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php You may have download a bios update if you are not running the latest version. Are you running any games or large programs when this is seen?

Most of the time I am running games or music but sometimes it just resets when using a word document. The temperature remains around 30 degrees so I doubt that would be it.

The two or three things that come to mind right away other then a heat problem are 1) faulty cap in the supply 2)board component: cap leaking-bad bios eprom 3) battery on board. Note the last would super rare on a recently installed board except for a bad battery from the start. I trust you are referring to system restarts or sudden reboots when this is seen. The #4 item that would be very likely is the need to update the bios itself.

You first look up your model board at the manufacturer's support site for the updates available for the bios as well as others. Using the process to first select the type of device needing updates and then the socket type brings you to http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_List.aspx?CPUType=Socket+754

They have a Winflash tool available for updating the bios. The instructions for updating the bios are in the board's manual as well as at the support. The manual older type method of updating required preparing a 3 1/2" floppy to boot from where you would follow the instructions to use a dos tool for this.
