I have custom built machine which kept restarting itself.Right before i get to the log on window it says hard disk consistency check something like that. I did a hard disk check but it only seemed to make the problem worse. Every things runs very crappy. Also the HDD LED is always on and blinking even when idle. Im not sure if its the really the hard drive as every thing else is new. The Cpu temps is always about 4OC and the mobo about 32C

Celeron D 346
20 gig WD hd(i got it from a friend)
Windows Xp PROFESIONAL

Also before installing windows xp it froze while trying to format using the NTFS option. So I shut it off and used the FAT32 option which worked.

Please Help

It sounds like a newer SP2 included release of XP was used on the drive where if you are running a copy with only the first service pack you could run into the problem with trying to repartition and reformat the drive. Western Digital had UDMA enable and other diagnostic tools for running tests on the drive itself to see if there are any bad sectors to be concerned about.

http://support.wdc.com/download/ is the home page for the download and knowledge base with several links for the Lifeguard and other drive tools. Now that FAT32 is on the drive with a fresh partition and format the XP installer should be able to delete the current and create and format a new one without problems. The NTFS type is certainly better for the XP Pro version. If that is the only drive and set as master you should see running good. But the restarts could point at another hardware problem other then the drive. You could simply need a better cable or try the cable select jumper setting. Those would be the favorable successes there. A board or other problem would suggest a factory defect. The temps are real good for cpu and board where that can be ruled out.
