Computer randomly restarts

I recently built my computer and for some reason, usually about every 2-3 weeks, my computer restarts for no apparent reason. It gives no warning or anything. It just completely restarts itself and it doesnt happen until another 2-3 weeks. Anyone know what could be the problem?

With a two to three week gap between an unexpected restart you may be seeing XP's own crash control feature that will automatically reboot the system to avoid seeing system lockups when a program crashes. This can be disabled with a small edit of the system registry. The DWord value to modify is AutoReboot found at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl\"

When you highlight the registry key there go upto the the explorer bar menu and choose the "edit" dropdown list. Simply click on the "Modify" option there to change the "1" value to "0" and exit. You will most likely need to restart the system for the change to go into effect. Is there anything specifically running at the time when the restarts are seen? If you are in the middle of a large application or game or the system has been running longer on that day then others you may be starting to see a more serious overheating problem.

That brand of supply unfortunately is on the "Bad" list for makes and models. But that doesn't say whether or not the supply is the actual problem being seen. The 2-3 week gap between seeing an occasional and rare restart doesn't necessarily point at a hardware problem but more likely a software or Windows related type.

uh, how do i get to my key registries, to get to the crash control?// nevermind found it

it usually happens when im playing a game or idleing with a game on.
My Computer doesnt overheat or anything cause i watch the temperatures on my comp.
The gpu stays below 40 C (even on massive load) and everything else stays below around 20-30 C

Could that fix it?

Another thing, wheres the system log, so I can check if it says what the error was.

that could possibly it, im almost positive it is..

click start, run, type in regedit, and theres your registry..

Hm, I've turned on RegCleaner, nothing happens, but I do see it being processed in the task manager though...or is it scanning my harddrive? I'll wait 10 minutes.

Still not doing anything, just sitting there, no screen.

When RegCleaner runs it goes lightning fast. It is finished generally in less then one minute. The screen that remains open shows you what programs are left installed. That gives you the option to manually remove anything that you know is to be totally removed.

At the bottom of that window when it first starts you will see how it goes through and counts how many invalid keys it finds and there is a quick blink as it deletes those. Once that is done you simply close it after it removes inactive values. It scans the system registry not the entire drive.

Do you another atx type power supply onhand or can borrow? As I mentioned earlier CoolMax is on the shaky list for power supplies. If the system fired up normally with a different supply you would know the problem. But if you still see nothing you have to start looking at other things. I wondered what saw quite a few sudden restarts with the last build here until the lithium battery on the board went.

Your sig show the board there would be too new for that. Bad board? Take a close look around the board itself to see you anything discolored or a bulged out or leaking capacitor. Recheck the poower connections while inside.

thats my board

People say the northbridge gets "HOT" but I dunno if that could be my problem or not.

Mostly all my stuff are "budget" items. I looked for reasonable price and the stuff I needed for 600 bucks. All the games I play, perform to the limit where I like it. They all run above 80+ fps 4x/8x, so im happy with that. The random reboots just concern me if I were to be in a competition and it randomly restarts on me, I would be pretty pissed lol.

I recently got a system lock up, with the crash control turned off. My computer locked up and my computer screen looked as if I overclocked my video card way to much (thats what it looked like, i didnt actually overclock the video card). Any idea what problem that could be?

Just seeing Windows lock up during gaming is nothing new there. Drivers that get corrupted or deleted somehow can cause problems as well as sound drivers being the actual cause for video problems. Believe or not when I was seeing locks with another case the update of sound drivers corrected that fast. But you are also seeing the system itself restarting numerous times.

If your main chipset is cooking that will cause a number of problems. But the sudden restarts are occuring over a period of weeks not hours or minutes. The main things there to look at would be a sudden power dropoff or something overheating for a brief period when that is seen. A third likely thing to consider is a need to update the bios since Socket AM2 boards are the latesst AMD models out.

Well, nothing isnt being cooked at the moment or thats what i think.

I have the latest drivers, so I dunno if thats the problem.

Where could I go to to see Windows Errors before the system restarts? Is there some kind of Windows Log?

The event viewer is the log that tracks all system activities. You may have something more to work with there. In the Control Panel open up the Adminstrative Tools section and double click on the Event Viewer there to see the logs Windows records. Review the information on using this seen at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...roddocs/en-us/snap_event_viewer.mspx?mfr=true

You will have to follow the trail somewhat if you suspect any hardware of being the cause. By looking over the different logs you can see what any one hardware doing at the time. At least if you find a specific error code that can help in finding if it is hardware or software related.
