Computer reset problem

:confused:Hi,

I've recently resetted my computer (used restore function: equal to format harddisk and install XP), because I had some virusses making my computer really slow. My computer now works fine again, but I have trouble setting op my (wireless) network connection.

I tried several times to set up the wireless network connection, but it just doesn't work (Network card: Sitecom Wireless PCI adapter Turbo G WL-171, 54G). The computer sees our router, makes connection, has an IP adress but doesn't have standard gateway etc, although it had before I resetted my computer.

I think my problem may be due to not having installed Service pack 2, but because I've no internet connection I can't download it.

Hi, first off, i highly doubt not installing SP2 has anything to do with this problem, if it can see and connect to your router then the drivers are working fine, this is an issue with your settings.

I'm guessing you didn't assign the IP's yourself, you let the router assign them automatically (called DHCP), yes?

If so, try disabling DHCP on your PC and assign the IP address, subnet mask and gateway address manually, if you get a connection, stick to it.

To get to these options, click on START, open CONTROL PANEL and go to NETWORK CONNECTIONS, right click on your wireless connection and select properties, in the box that contains things like "Client for Microsoft Windows", scroll down and click on INTERNET PROTOCOL TCP/IP, now click on PROPERTIES

In the next window you will see exactly what you have to do, click on "USE THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS" instead of "OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS MANUALLY". Enter your details and away you go.

Didn't work...

Did this, but it doesn't work...
Because I'm not really used to the wireless interface I'd really like to download SP2... Does anyone know how to download SP2 without using Microsoft update (because Update will say I've already installed it on the computer i'm currently using)

There is a way of course but first be sure to connect to Internet just in case. You know that you should call your ISP? They can only give you information about your IP addresses. Everytime you reformat.

Your ISP has no control over IP address, gateway addresses and subnet masks on your own internal network... And you could easily find out your WAN IP address if you wanted to know it (how it would help in this situation i am still guessing but...)

In short, his ISP doesnt need to be involved at all...
 
You sure? It has to with my ISP. Really. You can't make a new connection without getting the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. In some countries, meaning with some Internet Service Providers you have to call them to obtain IP-s.
I see you are from UK. I'm interested in where is sanchisa from? And also who is your Internet Service Provider.

He's right I think: we have multiple computers/pda's accessing the network, and we didn't have any problems with it. I get a IP adress, that's not the problem, but the computer just doesn't connect properly, so my default gateway etc is offline. I know it IS a computer problem, my ISP 'works' fine.
 
Ipconfig/ping

It gives everything normal compared to before the computer broke down. I tried to ping, that didn't work.

When i try to repair the internet connection (right click>repair) It returns I can't get a IP adress, but when I check my IP adress later, it just returns a normal ip adress. Also, my router doesn't dedect my computer.

NEED HELP:(:confused:
