computer running slow

my computer is running alot slower than it should be doing. It has run slow just about all the time I have had it. Even if I re-install everything so it is like how it was when I first bought it, it still runs slow. Since I bought it I have added a new hard drive and more memory. The spec is:

80gb Hard Drive
250gb Hard Drive
960mb Memory
2.8ghz Processor
P4

I also have another computer that has a lower spec and it runs faster than the one I have now. It has:

60gb Hard Drive
256mb Memory
2.2ghz Processor
P4

please can someone help me.

thanks

How many processes do you have running? Go to start > run > the type msconfig and hit enter. You can disable all programs that you do not need. This will speed things up bit.

Have you tried this already? If so let us know.

ive tried disabling all the programs and it still doesn't make any difference. I've also re-installed the system and when I first use it again it still runs slow.

anymore suggestions?

Do you have the lastest definitions for the antivirus/firewall program you use? Run some tests. Sypware can really slow down your PC>

i think there are two reasons:
1. may be ur system is affected by virus.
2. may be one of ur hardware is damage.

u said u have two hard drive in a PC, u should disconnect one of ur hard drive and try.

i think u should format Drive c:/ and re-install the operating system.
I think thats a bit too dramatic. Why lose all that data when he could just take other steps to solve the problem?

Yeah, I agree. It never hurts to give the systems a good old full system (virus) scan.

You should get rid of programs you don't use. Frees up space and theres the possiblilty of less programs the run at startup

Lets make sure the hardware running at the speed is suppose to be at first. I dont think it a virus or spyware because he says it still run slow after completly reformatting it.

download cpu-z
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download
and tell us what it says you running. Lets make sure it running at the 2.8ghz it suppose to be running at.

Have a look at the hard drives and make sure that they run at the same speed, and that the bigger hard drive is set as a master drive, and the other as a slave.

do you need anymore information than this?

That's not quite what they said...that may be what was meant but I'm thinking it just means everything that was installed has been uninstalled. :)
Even if I re-install everything so it is like how it was when I first bought it
Your slower computer might actually be effectively faster if it is a P4, the 2.8GHz machine is a Celeron

this might be of more use

there is a really good programme called ad aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ it is free and this is what i used when i was having similar problems it stops dodgee programmams running that slow a computer down also if you have recently installed any hardware on your computer and the install might have gone a bit wrong this can cause slowness as this happened to me when i installed my ipod it can be really anoying but if you try and think back to when it started and if you installed any hardware e.g. Ipod, camera link , scanner or printer if you uninstall them you should notice a difference and then reinstall them following the instructions as i found, helped
well i hope this info is of any use to you :)

I've also re-installed the system and when I first use it again it still runs slow.anymore suggestions?
Have you tried reformating?

Hopefully he means this as a temporary thing ....

I dont think it a virus or spyware because he says it still run slow after completly reformatting it.
Formatting doesnt always get rid of virii

Check hardware

I'm sure if you started with a new copy of windows it wouldn't run slow unless it was hardware. So check your harddrive, ram, processor, ect, ect. I really hope you solve this problem it really sucks to have a slow computer.
