computer running very slow when burning/ripping

My buddies pc runs very very slow when he burns or rips media. His specs are:

C2D E6400
Abit AB9 Pro
2gig Gskill DDR2 800
LiteOn 16x dvd/r/rw/dl

He also has 2 sata drives so the burner is the only IDE drive. I tried reinstalling the IDE controller drivers. I made sure DMA was enable in IDE channel properties. I ran a defrag. wmp runs at 16-17% in task manager and CPU usage is around 50-55% when ripping a cd. What are some other things I can check? Anyone have any advice? Could it be a bad drive?

Well, what kind of things is he doing while hes burning CD's? Listening to music? watching a video? playing solitaire? If he's multi-tasking while writing a disc, it's rather common for your computer to lag a little.
 
I only have an Athlon 64 3200+ and I can do all kinds of things while burning. I've watched a DVD and burned a CD before, no problem. I'd say that it'd have to be a shoddy drive... an E6400 should dominate that kind of multitasking.

Spyware could be the problem, adware, do a virus scan spyware scan, etc etc.
 
Spyware would make the CPU usage jump, wouldn't it? Do you have an extra burner that you could swap out, that would be a quick way to find out.
 
Come on. This is an E6400 we're talking about. I doubt he's owned it long enough to have the harddrive too fragmented, and even if it was, the processor should be able to handle it. It's the drive, I say!

i agree. mabye if it was some other processor... but that has got to be the drive
 
yea thats what Im thinking. its gotta be the drive. I just built the pc not to long ago. All the hardware is new except the case.
