I recently went to install a Geforce 9800 GTX+ video card. When it didnt fit i put my old video card back in.

Now: I still have the software to run the videocard in (the old one, the new one is not installed) but it doesnt register the videocard in dxdiag.

My computer bluescreens, if I used regcure (full version, I was desperate) to try and fix it, it doesnt help, but when i restart i get a new error

Inital error:

c0000218,
Unknown Hard Error

second error after regcure:
STOP 0x0000006F (0x00000130, 0x000000, 0x000000, 0x000000)

I need help fixing it, ill get pictures up later if i can.

Thank you,

Shiroun

You likely didn't fully reseat the card fully down in the slot. Try reseating it first to see if that's all you need and didn't damage the card or slot while changing cards around.

Ill try reseating it right now, but my music as well as mic arent working either.

edit: didnt work. still errors

Are you using onboard or an installed card for sound there? Lately when replacing a tuner card due to a replacement of the same by another brand due to problem with Vista I got the second card working well for a display problem while suddenly no sound was heard?

Apparently the sound card somehow lifted itself up in the slot and sound was restored by simply remobing the card as suspected. If you have a separate card there that would be the first thing to try out if the mic/line in is on a sound card and not the board.

I'm on XP, and when ive reseated everything, it has failed to change the issue. I still am getting these BSoDs.

Well the first error was a registry error.
The second one, I have no idea. It was after you used regcure, and I dont have a clue what it removed.

So your saying you just removed your old card. The new card would not fit and you just replaced your old card? If so what is your old card? And did you remove or add drivers?

My old card is a Radeon x600 SE video card, no drivers were removed or installed.

Here is what i mean about it not registering:

The first thing to try now is removing anything installed for both video and sound since both are knocked out with Windows "forgetting things" like how to redetect the old card. I've run into that on Vista as well as XP where a new card simply won't be seen or a card will sudddenly not work.

Following removal and a few reinstalls with a system restart inbetween each change Windows will finally show "new hardware found, Windows is now installing drivers..." etc. there. Likewise Windows is not seeing either video or sound card if one is installed where you will likely have to fuss with installs, rmovals, repeat installs to see those working again once Windows wakes up!

I've actually discovered my sound, video card, etc dont register in safe mode, but they ARE detected.

I went on the phone with dell, and they got that error fixed, however a new error formed.

0x07E (0x06, then the other 3 were a bunch of jumbled numbers & letters)

The 0x07E error refers to one of the device drivers there. It's likely a problem where the driver is trying to be loaded into a memory address Windows has reserved for something else seeing that message being generated. Apparently the Dell support advice only saw partial not full results or a driver wasn't fully installed by Windows.

Ok, how might I go about fixin it. They are thinking of formatting, and Im going to ask for an alternative, and if they say no, well I know there is one i just dont know what it is.

What model Dell is this being seen on? That's one thing we didn't get into before. Sometimes a particular model prebuild or laptop will have a common error that save on the need to see a full system recovery.

I'm beginning to suspect a possible memory problem if you are still running the original 512mb. That could be two 256mb dimms or one single 512mb likely a pair of 256s being a dual channel board. A faulty dimm will start seeing an endless list of errors until replaced as well as problems when going to install practically anything.

The quick way to rule that out is to run memtest or another good memory tester. If you should find a bad dimm with two taking one out while testing the other that model runs PC2-3200 or PC2-4200 memory upto 4x1gb.

The latest version of the free tester memtest is available at http://www.memtest.org/ Without a floppy drive typical of most systems now you can download a free ISO disk image to burn to a cd-r or order a premade one for the cost of the cd plus shipping at http://www.memtest86.com/

You have two tools to work with there before considering a reinstall of Windows. If you continue to see problems following a clean install of both video and sound updates the next step would be testing the memory to see there any faults there.

I'd say give them both a whirl to see if things clear up with the updates or any memory faults are found. That will save on any need to start off fresh if a simple correction is all that is needed.

If it's a registry problem, drivers made inactive for some reason, or a hardware fault it will. But at least you will have some type of answer.

reinstalled drivers, didnt work.

I can't burn or run CDs in safemode, my computer locks down a lot of things. My video card is detected, as is sound and music and mic, but they are locked off because of safemode. Therefore, it is another problem.

RULED OUT
-Registry issue
-Driver issue (for the most part)

NOT RULED OUT
-Hardware issue
-Virus (I did have that antispyware XP 2009 virus, but i think i got rid of it, could that cause this?)
-more
