Computer shutdown after tilting it a bit.

Hey guys, this is the deal, ive had this computer built by me for about 2 months
it was working perfectly, its a AMD Atlhon xp2 +4400
512 mb, a good working video card and thats about it..
(its "good working video card" because i tested it in another computer)
anyways, today i was just surfing the web and doing school work, and this cable was stuck under my computer, so what i basiclly did, was tilt the computer over to remove the cable, and thats right when it shutdown.

I tried turnig the computer back on and again the same thing, but this time it wasnt titlted, so i opend the case up and looked everything in detail and the only thing i could find was a peeled off sticker that stays on a fan (the one that tells u the voltage psi etc...), and it was on top of the motherboard, i took it off just in case, and tried turning on again, this time it didnt show anything on the screen (no video), no beeps no nothing, and from there on is where im stuck, i couldnt find anything that indicates what could have gotten wrong, besides the southbridge chipset fan being extremlly hot i have no clue what could've happen, can anyone please help me?

btw, the memory and the CPU arent in operation im sure, because the memory and the heatsink arent even warm after i turn it off.
and the fans do turn btw =)

i think that hes right, check the psu if absolutely NOTHING happens when you turn it on, but if it does start fan spinning, then check the cpu and all tha cables. very often, vibrations make a power cable pull out slightly, and when the ocmputer is rocked, the cables will disconnect. make sure to unplug the computer before you open it though, you dont want to get electrecuted
 
yea i thought so too, but what i did is i remounted the computer piece by piece on a noneletrosensitive surface, and same thing happend, just the fans spinned
ok, my psu is a 450 watt one, i didnt have a spare one like that one to test, so i just got this old 250 from another computer, and the same thing happend, i dont know if "maybe" it didnt work because its a lower voltage or what. . .
cpus working, video card is working all hard drives are working, im still in the process of checking the wires, but they seem ok
what i did was take out video card and try again, and nothing, then i took out harddrives, and nothing, then i took out the cpu and turned it on, and heres how i know its working, usually when i take the cpu out and turn the pc on, it gives me a No Cpu Voice error, and now it didnt, didnt even give me video. =(

do you guys think its worth it buying a new psu? just to test...?
 
Did you try booting up with just the mobo, CPU, and maybe a low end graphics card with the 250w? It should be able to handle that... otherwise I would say that either your graphics card or mobo is fried.
 
would a sticker be able to fry a mobo?

maybe its the psu, because the psu i tested with its from a amd sempron, and by what i know the psu that i used to test, didnt have that extra 4 pin that you put right next to the atx connector.

it has the 12 v atx connector and the regular big one(sry dont know if theres a different name), does it make i difference? because i remeber that my pc would only boot, if right next to the atx connector i put the extra 4 pin
 
I dont think its the sticker, It probably fell to the bottom of the case and when you turned it on its side to open it up, fell over on the board. Just a guess? And yes newer mother boards need the 4 pin CPU power connector to boot.
 
sounds like the best option, especially if your 250 watt doesn't have that extra 4pin plug, cause it won't boot without that so just becasue the 250 doesn't work either doesn't mean it's something else. What have you got to loose, you can always return it, work to drive up prices at best buy by returning used items, lol :p
 
just get a PSU, not too good, not those knock-off ones, with a 4 pin connector. jist get like a 300 watt or somehting
 
Hey guys
i've been doing some testing myself and here are the things i noticed and "think".

- The Video card, memory, and cpu are working properly
- Im stuck in which one i should check, MOBO or PSU
- I noticed that if i "try" booting up with the CPU attached, even tho it dosnt actually boot, you can hear the hardrive as if it was starting to load, but it stops shortly after, but if i try to boot again but without the CPU attached, it does no such thing, so maybe it has something to do with chipset or something im lost =(


Maybe this tips will help u help me :'(

This is an old topic, but I figured I would offer some closure.

The motherboard was defective and under warranty.
With process of elimination and a good RMA support, it got fixed in no time ;)

ps: I apologize for reviving an old thread, you can lock it.
 
Actually, That's really cool that you got it working. It's always nice to have closure on an issue. A lot of times I wonder if I actually ever helped anyone or if the issue was ever fixed.
