computer shuting down by itself

Hi,
shuting down by itself and pretty quick, sometimes while windows is loading, most of times 5 min after it's on.
So I'd like to check if it comes from the battery. A friend of mine got a EM-520P4G (3600mAh) I could try to replace the existing EM-520C2G (2200mAh). What are the chances to damage it a bit more?
BTW, I'd be glad to be aware of other possibilities regarding the cause.

In recent news there has been a number of manufacturer's recalls on laptop Lithium batteries since some were going up in flames! You may want to start looking into that as well as checking you cpu and other temps. You could be seeing something overheating there.

Still, isn't there any risk for the computer, switching the batteries as above?
 
Sounds like your system may be overheating due to dust intake or something like that. Also i've errors on hard drives cause computers to shut down.
 
I'm not sure about the HDD thing in this case cause the computer will also shut down when I boot from a windows cd...
 
when you first turn the machine on do you hear the fans turn on full blast briefly. And are your fans going at full speed when it shuts down?
 
I'm just wondering if it is heat or a power level problem. When you first startup any system you see the strongest pull for power then. Have you tried using an ac adapter without the battery in to see the problem is still seen?

I've pulled out the battery and it didn't shut down for some time. I'll let you know if this happens again.
Anyway, thank you very much everybody. You all guys really make this forum the best.
 
Thats an overheating issue you have there; that means that your heatsink fan is fully clogged with dust or the heat sink has come loose. More likely that it is full of dust.
The only way you could clean it out is to actually open the machine.
 
Well, the computer's shut down again.
I'll try to find somebody able to check it inside.

How old is the system there? If this was recently bought bring it back to the dealer or if online contact the vendor about warranty options. A rather new portable won't see a ton of dust and debris unless exposed to that type of environment that fast. I've serviced old, old notebooks only to find a clean interior while the outside was covered with crud!

The one advantage of laptops over desktops is they are generally expected to see some clutter. People travel with them all the time. Desktops always sit in one spot where dust can accumilate at a faster rate. A bad thermal layer on the sink would be one thing to see overheating. The idea of bringing to someone with experience for examination would be the smart move since these are compact self contained units. You can easily damage it and void any warrranty by opening it yourself!
