Computer Shuts Down by Itself

Hi, I am new here,

My computer shuts down unexpectedly and restarts itself. It happened 5 times today in the space of 20 minutes. Could it be the result of low electricity, or something else? I don't know if it will happen again.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Stefan

I'm having the same problem!

We've narrowed mine down to a bad PSU... It came with my case...

What are the spacs of your power supply?

open your case up and look on your PSU for the specs, like voltage lines, amps, etc.

what kind of computer? when did you get it? specs of the PC?

Intel Pentium III processor
866 MHz
320 MB of RAM
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002

I got it in 2002.

it could be oldness. or a virus. try running Zone Alarm Pro and get the trial at ZoneLabs.com

did this just start randomly one day?

I ran Kaspersky AV Control Centre and no viruses.

It all started two days ago. I had problems connecting to the internet so I went to my internet providers. The guy told me that I needed a new network card, but he shut down the computer several times from the On button. So I got back home and the problems started. The computer just shut down and restarted but wouldn't load Windows. I tried again and again but it just wouldn't start. Or if it started, it restarted itself and then again wouldn't start. Yesterday I had no problems. But today it happened 5 times.

The other guys are possibly right although it could be due to the CPU overheating. if it's that old it may be that the CPU fan has stopped working. You may want to open up your case and turn the computer on to see if the fan is still working. if it's not you will need to buy a new one.

Tha fan is working alright.

id get a new one. 5 years is a long time, i bet its oldness but also bet that guy eternally screwed it up.

what do you use your PC for?

If you do nothing but surf the net with it then there is no reason to spend 100+ on a new one.
try craigslist, if your city is pretty active you can find a similar pc for around 50 bucks.. there will be scammers on the site but as long as you stay smart you should be ok. In all my dealings with them i've never had a single complaint. You may want to go along with these guys first to see if this isn't a problem you can correct. Good luck! :)

So I had my computer fixed today. It turns out that there was a virus, which my anti-virus programme didn't detect. I now have a new anti-virus system. Also, the RAM "wasn't clean" so the guy cleaned it up. He said the PC is fine now and I'll see if it really is.

Thank you guys for trying to help. I appreciate it.

Bye.
