computer shutting down prematurely

Hi all,

I'm having a problem which I think is related to overheating, but I can't figure out what's wrong. It started by me getting errors like "Firefox failed to write to C:\...". I assumed something was wrong with my hard drive.

When I restarted, as soon as I started seeing some print (such as "IDE scan", or the amount of memory) it just shut down. It did this repeatedly. I then took out the CMOS battery for a minute and tried again. This time it got all the way to the Windows starting up screen then shut down again.

Like I said, I think it's my CPU overheating, but I just cleaned my heatsink and it seems to be working fine. I don't see what else would cause my computer to overheat so quickly. Also, the fact that it even got to the windows screen suggests that everything is potentially working fine.

Sorry for the long post & thanks for your help.

Check your bios and run Memtest86+ if you got it also try opening windows in safe mode, could be a driver.... thats where I would start :)

you said you just cleaned your heatsink.... you took it out and cleaned it all or did you just clean the dust off the top?
