Computer slow and Outlook has stopped

Hi,

As the title to this thread suggests, my computer is slow and Microsoft Outlook has stopped working.

Unfortunately, I discovered the (sticky) recommended anti-virus thread (at the top of the forum page) too late and I have been running McAfee antivirus which could be contributing to the problem but I'm sure there's more to it.

I did some net research (before I came here) and landed in a Microsoft site that recommended something called "PC Cleaner Pro". When I ran a scan with this program, it told me I had nearly 10,000 problems but when I ran Malware, that program told me I had no problems. My computer is still slow and Outlook will still not work.

I humbly ask for assistance, please.

Regards,
Troy

I can't help you with those logs but there are some experts here on them and I'm sure someone will respond to them.

I would for sure get rid of McAfee and it may take more than a normal uninstall to get it all removed from the system.

There might be something in the log that pertains to the Outlook issue but, have you tried compatibility mode?

Uninstall that pc cleaner pro program. Those types of programs cause more harm then good anyway.

I do see some software issues in the log. How much system memory is installed? What processor are you using?

Lets start cleaning you up.

Please rerun hijackthis and place checks next to the following entries.

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

Then I would like for you to run the following program so I can get an idea of whats going on and if you have any infections.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    Combofix

  • When the page loads click on the blue combofix download link next to the BleepingComputer Mirror.
  • Save the file to your windows desktop. The combofix icon will look like this when it has downloaded to your desktop.

    cf-icon.jpg
  • We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

  • Close all open Windows including this one.
  • Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Instructions on disabling these type of programs can be found here.
Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
  • Please click on I agree on the disclaimer window.
  • ComboFix will now install itself on to your computer. When it is done, a blue screen will appear as shown below.

    cf-preparing.jpg

  • ComboFix is now preparing to run. When it has finished ComboFix will automatically attempt to create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry as shown in the image below.

    erunt.jpg

  • Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will attempt to detect if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. If you already have it installed, you can skip to this section and continue reading. Otherwise you will see the following message as shown below:

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

  • At the above message box, please click on the Yes button in order for ComboFix to continue. Please follow the steps and instructions given by ComboFix in order to finish the installation of the Recovery Console.
  • Please click on yes in the next window to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will now disconnect your computer from the Internet, so do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet. When ComboFix has finished it will automatically restore your Internet connection.
  • ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to their previous settings. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan. An example of this can be seen below.

    still-scanning-clockchanges.jpg

  • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
  • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
  • Now you just click on the edit menu and click on select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Then come to the forum in your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

I would also like for you to post a log from combofix that it created but didn't show you. Navigate to C:\Qoobox and in that folder will be a file named add-remove programs.txt. Open that file and copy and paste the contents back here.

Uninstall that pc cleaner pro program. Those types of programs cause more harm then good anyway.

I do see some software issues in the log. How much system memory is installed? What processor are you using?

In your next reply please post:

Hi John,

Thankyou for getting back to me so quickly.

PC Cleaner gonski!!!! I sort of figured it was "one of those" programs so I uninstalled it after I posted here.

I'm not sure where to look for the system memory and processor info you're after although I can tell you it is a DELL Dimension E521 that I got around 2007.

As for the computer now, Outlook will still not open. Whenever I try to open it, it tells me an error has been detected in the Documents and Settings, Applications area.

After I ran Hijack this and deleted the selected files, the computer froze and I had to restart it.

Combofix, log

Many, many thanks,

Please uninstall the following programs.

Adobe Reader 8.1.4
Japanese Fonts Support For Adobe Reader 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 35
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Then go here and download the latest version of adobe reader and java.

http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=BUIGO

www.java.com.

As far as outlook goes, try making a new login account and see if you can open outlook. If so, then your user profile is damaged. You can either continue to use the login account and transfer your data to the new one or do a system restore back to when outlook did work and see what happens.

To find out what processor and how much memory you have, do this. Right click on "computer" click on properties. On the general tab, it will list cpu and memory about halfway down.

Hi John,

Requested programs deleted and latest programs of Adobe and Java downloaded.

System information:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
2.20GHz, 1.00GB of RAM

As for Outlook, before I do anything, I should tell you the error message that comes up says,

Cannot open your default e-mail folders. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Documents and Settings\Troy\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help.

I appreciate the "Help" section of the message but I cannot open Outlook to be able to access Help....The message has an "OK" box in it and when I click on the box, it shuts Outlook down.

Regards,
Troy.

3.In the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box, enter the name of the .pst or .ost file that you want to check, or click Browse to search for the file.

I apologise if this question sounds thick, but where do I find the name of the .pst or .ost file I want to run? I did a search with .pst of the files and folders but it came up negative.

P.S. I apologise for the length of time between replies but I'm a shiftworker and don't always have time to get to the computer.

Regards,
Troy.

Use the browse button and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Troy\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

(I got the info from an earlier posting of yours :) )

Thankyou to everyone who offered their help. Both problems are now solved.

Just some feedback for next time someone asks similar questions about Outlook. My problem in locating the files is that they were hidden. Once I unlocked them, all was fine.

Regards,
Troy

So this is not the first time my computer has had to be fixed. Now that I am back up and running again, what should I install to help prevent going through this again??

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Mcafee (sp?) until my subscription expires at which time I'd like to delete it and run the programs recommended on this site. I do understand it may take a few attempts to get rid of Mcafee but, from what I've read on this site, it will be worth it.

In the meantime, what other programs should I run? Malware?

Regards,
Troy

Hi John,

I was hoping you'd reply. You put so much time into this site helping everyone that I didn't want to bother you directly. Now that you have, could you clarify a few things for me, please?

Before I posted, I'd read the "sticky" thread at the top of this page. In it you say you use Superantispyware yet you haven't recommended that here? Am I to use cCleaner in its' place?

I also think I remember reading somewhere that you run MSE and something else? I re-checked that sticky thread but couldn't find where you talked about it. If there's a paid version of MSE then is the free version sufficient?

I just checked and my subscription for McAfee is valid until March 2014. At the time I renewed, I didn't know about this site and took the best value that McAfee provided. If the programs you've recommended are all free then I'm not losing anything if I delete McAfee now and go to the better programs you recommend. In fact, I'm probably gaining.

Regards,
Troy.

I hardly ever use Superantispyware anymore. I only use it when Malwarebytes and other programs won't catch something. I use Avast and Malwarebytes as my backup but I very seldom get infected as Avast usually blocks me from visiting any bad web pages. MSE is free, there is no paid version.

Yeah, I need to go back and update some of my threads as they are getting old and better programs have came out.

Yes, I would highly recommend getting rid of McAfee and using either MSE or Avast.

Any other questions you need answered?

Thanks John, I appreciate your feedback.

Avast is the program I meant to refer to....do I need the paid version or is the free version with Malwarebytes and Ccleaner sufficient?

Regards,
Troy.

Hi John,

I've logged onto the Avast website and downloaded the free antivirus. While I was there, I noticed the paid version has alot of other options.

Why don't I need these?

Regards,
Troy
