Computer start up problems

Hi guys,

I just replaced a mobo and cpu combo for my boss, and when i tried to boot it up i ran into problems....

It was an Acer computer, so my boss gave me his Acer CDs, one of them being a system CD and one of them is a Windows XP CD, i tried booting up using the Windows XP CD, i get the message bootup failed, and that it requires the system CD

so i put in the system CD, but then the comp just jumps to a screen where it displays the information of the hard drive and stuff, and it just sits there and doesnt do anything

I really need some help and you guys seem to be my best hope...one more thing is im using the original hard drive, which is not wiped out cause i have no idea how to wipe out the hard drive from the bios settings

thanks guys1

I am guessing that the motherboard you installed was not of the same type as the old one, you updated it right?

The acer disks have the drivers for the old motherboard, and they are trying to install on the new motherboard. I would tell your boss it needs a new copy of XP or whatever OS you are installing.

When you get to the point where you are installing windows it will give you an option to reformat and install windows.

yea you are correct, the motherboard is a different one than the original

so getting a new XP disc should solve the problem? he gave me an Acer Windows XP SP2 CD, that didnt boot up either, is that CD locked to only Acer computers?

just to make sure, it's a AMD Sempron 3400+ socket AM2 processor, will it go well with the plain Windows XP Home edition 32 bit with SP2B?

one more thing, the motherboard came with its own drivers disc, but instructions says that it needs to be loaded AFTER windows is installed, and when i tried to use it to boot up nothing happened, so should i get the new XP disc, install windows and THEN install the drivers?

thanks very much!

is there any reason why the Acer XP SP2 CD wont boot up? is it locked onto Acer comps or is it because it's not a boot up CD and it doesnt install unless the bios and mobo and everything is loaded?

one more question, sorry i have so many questions....the Windows XP CD, the one im looking at is OEM, there's another option for Upgrade, is OEM the one that will boot up and install windows automatically when i start the comp?

It might. I've had a Dell XP Home CD boot on a Custom before. No reason why yours shouldn't.

Yes, Upgrade will ask for your old OS CD...

The Acer Xp cd will NOT work with your current motherboard. It is locked into the old motherboard.

Get the OEM XP cd. The upgrade cd's suck.

ahhh ok thanks so much, i'll order that one and keep you guys updated

just to make sure, does XP home edition include Microsoft Office?

No, Office is a option you have to buy on it's own. But thats the same even if you buy the Pro version.

Vista's also another choice, IF you like it. Probably cheaper than XP these days.

No, but there's always OpenOffice as a free alternative :)
