Computer starts up then shuts down

i just fitted a new CPU heatsink and fan into my computer as the old one was too noisy. I took the large desktop into a computer shop and showed the old fan to a shop assistant we fitted the new one together, when i got home tried to start up my computer and it starts and then does some memory checking on the monitor screen then after about ten seconds of memory checking the computer suddenly shuts down. It has done the same thing everytime i try to start up the computer. Anyone know the problem? Was the CPU knocked when the new heatsink was fitted?

Did the heatsink come with a thermal pad attached to it? If not, did you use thermal paste on it? Is the heatsink locked down on the processor tight?

Hi Friend,
Without doubt it is something related with the power supply, this happens to me with my old computer, the most common problem occurs when you add new hardware to your system like a DVD drive, this kind of hardware consumes more power, try to change the power with one with higher capacity.

Thanks,
James

Ok but i took off the new fan and heat sink and put the old one in and it did the same thing- started up then shut down. Do you think it is still the power supply? I have a new power supply so should i try and fit it?

Also what is the best way to go about fitting a new power supply? I have never done this before?

Are you using new thermal paste when switching out the processors? If not, thats the problem.

I think the paste under the CPU is ok, I replaced the new heat sink and fan with the old one and i think there was some paste underneath, could check. Anyway i fitted the new power supply and it started up did the memory check ok, then as soon as it went to the next page it shut down again. Is this the motherboard?

If you aren't cleaning off the old paste and applying new when you switch processors then you need to, no if's, and's or but's about it.

i didn't switch processors i switched the heatsink and fans, should i make sure to apply the new paste should I?

Yes, you should clean off the old compound on the top of the CPU and bottom of the heatsink and reapply. If all else fails, since it stopped working after taking it to the shop,(should have tested it before leaving) take it back and say hey look dude!

hardware problem

I can think of a few possible reasons.

First, do you see the BIOS loading up? If you do, high chance: the mobo is alright. If you don't even see the BIOS, it means the mobo is screwed and it's time to get a new one, my friend...
Otherwise, it could be that the CPU is fried or damaged or not connected properly. You can check for that.

where do you see the BIOs loading up?

Bought the Ainex HT-04 and am now using my computer, i guess it isnt the mother board if i can get into my computer, however my computer has suddenly shut down once when i clicked on itorrent and another time it just shut down. i also got a message saying the CPU is overheating! Is the Ainex HT-04 too thin? or did i not tighten the heat sink on the CPU enough?

Also when you fit the fan to the heat sink how do you know which way it should go? May have fitted the heatsink the wrong way- is there a best way to fit it?

well the aine HT 04 thermal pad seems to have enabled me to use my computer howver after a few hrs it still shuts down, anything i can do solve this?
