computer stays in sleep mode

I encountered an unusual, for me, problem with my computer. I would appreciate any advice I can get. Thank you in advance.
When I turn the computer on, it goes to the sleep mode and does not respond to anything. I see a black screen only.
A couple of times it showed me a screen with a choice of going to a setup or continuing with old values.
When I chose to continue, it went to the sleep mode. Next time I chose to go to setup. I did not see anything wrong. When I exited the setup, the computer went to the sleep mode.
I am just guessing that it could be the mainboard. Is it?

Make sure your monitor is plugged in. I had the same problem and I found out not having my monitor plugged in fully was the problem.

Thank you for your help everybody.

I checked my computer with two monitors. Hitting any key does not help. The problem is that the computer cannot boot. And I cannot go to the boot sector.
The problem developed like that:
At first, the computer was able to start windows after showing me the black screen for an hour or so. After windows started, everything was normal. Now it does not matter how long I wait, the screen stays black. So, I figure, whatever happens prevents the computer from booting.
I just do not know what can cause that, processor or mainboard, or maybe something else.
