Computer super slow...Help!!!

We have a Dell Inspiron 1100, Windows XP, SP2, Intel Celeron 2.40GHz, 2.39 GHz. 256 MB RAM

Can someone tell me what processes MUST be running in the background??? This thing is moving like molasses in winter!

There are about 20 that windows loads. You're best bet would be just doing a quick search for the name and you can usally find sites that tell you all grades of info on the files. Their security levels, spyware, etc.

hijackthis is another great program to kill all those startup files...

Just so you know, though, I've used a very similar system and they aren't very fast at all... Don't execpt much out of it...
 
If you disable startup files through msconfig and still run slow, you may want to post your problem in the computer security forum instead. :)
 
Speed it up

Go to download.com and download Ad Aware Se. It's an antispyware and it’s free. Also, Download Spybot. It's free as well. Make Sure to update the definitions before you scan. After the scan clean all objects. On Ad-Aware the first time you run it, check the first item "Perform smart system scan" and then clean the items found. Then restart your pc and click on the second option "Perform full system scan" then clean any items found. Run the Spybot second and then clean items found. Also, download Microsoft Antispyware, its free and a great program. Run it and clean the spyware found. It's easy. Just follow the steps. After you're done, run Hijackthis and post a log at a forum that will help you. If you need some forum recommendations just let me know. My pc used to be very slow until ran these programs and removed over 1,000 items. Now it fast!!!!!!!!! Don't forget to check for viruses as well. Download the Mcafee stinger. Download AVG antivirus, it’s also free. Run them and see if there's anything on your system. It's a great tool. . Lastly, install spyblaster to prevent spyware from installing on you pc.
