computer temps?

i have built/upgraded a computer i basically took an old 500 mhz computer and replaced everything in it new mobo, cpu, psu, hd cpu fan, and cd/dvd drives. But i am having problems with it. it runs into occasional shutdowns and has problems running games that requires using a disk drive. i donloaded speed fan and that fixed the occasional shutdown but i noticed that one of my temps seems to be up and down constantly and very unstable. what would cause this?

the temps on temp 3 range from -10 to 60 c and very erradict wont hold steady for more than a second or two. temp 2 holds steady about 30c. temp 1 holds right at 27C
 
Well its not temperature then (unless theres a sensor that isnt detected or isnt configured). The next common culprit would be the power supply, are you getting stable voltages etc.


(btw when i ask about the temps or voltages, i mean when the system is under load, not when its sitting there doing nothing)
 
ok voltages are as follows
+3.3/3.2 to 3.25
+12/11.4 to 11.7
+5/4.96 to 5.02
-5/+2 to -5.5
-12/-9.28 steady

I assume you're checking these values when the system is under stress but in any case, you +12V line is on the low side.


What problems do you have with games that need the disk drive?
 
Can you give some examples of these games? And does it freeze/lockup while the game is loading? WHile you're playing? Quitting?
 
well the main game that i play is age of empires 2 and it locks up when i play it not at start up might get to play 15 min to 1/2 hour bsfore the game locks up. i know its not the game cause it works in my old dell
 
well i found one thing out that i have a bad memory card or memory slot this could be the cause of the problem but how do i tell what card or slot is bad?
 
burn this onto a disk http://www.memtest86.com/ , then put it into the pc you want to test, and restart it. this program run's before Windows starts, and tests the RAM.
basicly.. if you see red lines popping up, you have a RAM problem :)

for the video card.. i dont know how to test that
 
well i finally found out why my computer would shutdown every now and then. It was the cpu. I replaced that celeron 2.7 piece of junk with a p4 2.66 and now i can run any program i want aand not have a problem.
