Computer to fit my need

I am getting ready to buy a new computer but not sure what I need to look for. My current computer is a E-Machine T3104 AMD Sempron TM Processor 3100+ 1.80 GHZ, 1.50 GB of Ram. I also use a Belkin Wireless card , while the main rounter is a Linksys. I have had nothing but troubles with the computer, while my husbands Emachine has worked good for him. I have a lot of problems with it freezing up .

We now know we need to spend more for what I want it to do. I have a great program called Replay AV8 , which is awesome. I do alot of recording of internet programs and then playing back later.

I use the computer 24 hrs a day to either record or listen to what I recorded, what is a good computer to look for, up to $1000. and if I built it (like with Dell) what do I want to pay alot of attention to. Should I get Vista or stick with XP . I want to be able to use my Replay AV8 on it and I know that Vista doesnt let you use some of your programs. Also have a HP Ipaq 6315 that has to Active sync with it. Dont know if Vista will let me.

do you have an antivirus or a firewall, spy ware protection etc. if not, this may be causing your computer to run slowly...

as for replay av8...im not sure if it runs on vista, but you'll probably want to stick with xp anyway... vista is a memory hog....

and about the activesync issue.... activesync works on both xp and vista...:D

Thanks for your help. I do have a virus/firewall protection. I live in WI so we have internet/cable through Charter that gives us a Charter Security Suite protection. Its pretty good. I also run Ad-ware and Spybot and defrag and disk cleanup pretty often. I havent had anything major

Do you recommend , when ordering a computer and you get to choose what you need, anything special that would be above you normally get on a computer, if you recorded alot? I have a lot of things running . My husband is asking me what I need in a computer and I am not sure. Just dont want to be slowed all the time.

Also , thanks for the advice about the XP, I really like XP. Also the info on the 6315
 
Hey, Im not too up with audio recording, however I do know video quite well. For video when your capturing you want as much memory as possible to lower your droped frames. For you i wold recomend a really good audio card (audigy 2 or better)(obviously) and atleast 1.5 gb of ram.

Also i agree with cyber, stick with XP, if you want to save memory, vista isn't your friend. For your Anti Virus go with avast, it has a very small memory footprint as far as i know.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I appreciate it. I do use a lot of memory with all my programs so I definitely dont need vista to use more. Your tips will help me with choosing.
