Computer too hot?

Hey guys I just checked my temps...
Motherboard 36 °C (97 °F)
CPU 54 °C (129 °F)
Seagate ST380011A 44 °C (111 °F)
And I don't know what a good temperature is, but those seem VERY high. My fans are running:
CPU 917 RPM
Chassis 2033 RPM
Any suggestions?

We need to know what processor you have, 54C isn't that bad for most processors, but again it depends if it's idle or under load.

also you cpu fan seems to be going kinda slow

Agreed. Adp, are you sure those fan speeds are for the right fans (CPU isn't 2k and Chasis isn't 900)? If the CPU fan is actually spinning that slow, you can enter BIOS and disable the SmartFan setting. SmartFan will adjust the CPU HSF speed according to temp. With it disabled, it will spin at 100% all the time, moving more air and keeping the CPU cooler.

Is that CPU temp under Load or Idle?

It's always good to double check with another Temp monitoring program. I'm not sure why, but different programs just seem to 'like' different configs better. Some play nicer with Everest, others with SpeedFan. Even similar setups - it's really odd. Eh, anyway, SpeedFan is a nice one to use, and lots of folks love PC Wizard.

If you get similar readings with other programs and you're concerned about the temp, I'd change the BIOS settings. Cooler is better, yes, but unless you're running above 60*C at Idle, it's not CPU-life threating.

I hnestly don't know the difference between idle and load.

Well the only reason i brought it up at all is because i thought it may be slowing down my computer.

Idle is when your system is just sitting there, or web-browsing, email, etc.
Load is when you're opening large programs, gaming, or doing other very CPU-intensive tasks.

As far as slowing down your system, yes, there is something called 'scaling'. Scaling is what happens when the CPU gets too hot, but before it's auto-shutdown point. In an attempt to run cooler, some CPU's will cut back their clock speed to try and run cooler. When that happens, yeah, performance is affected. Scaling is different than other power-saving features such as EIST, or AMD's version.

In short, unless your performance gets drastically slower, you start getting auto-shutdowns from the heat, or you really hate seeing an Idle temp in the 50's, don't stress out about it - you're good. If you want to bring the temp down for whatever reason, just say the word and we'll be able to offer some pointers.

Most welcome. Just be sure to return the favor at some point down the road and lend a helping hand to someone else.

Welcome to CF!

Just so that you know, Apd, your cpu is running hot. its in the 60's(c)that cpu actaully take damage, and having it run at that heat(seems IDLE), it might me going to 59C+-. thats dangerous. Try lowering the clock speed, and if all else fails, get a new cooler. and as for that your comp is running slow, your CPU is not very good. not BAD but you could use a faster one!

No, it's not. A bit warm compared to other CPU's, but hardly 'hot', especially when compared to some other CPU's people run.

His CPU has a max-rated temp of 85*C. So long as it doesn't run at close to that speed for hours on end, he won't have any problems. My old P4 would often hit 50's at Idle and low 70's under load, and I had it for...2.5 years? Worked perfectly throughout it's entire life.

Adp, again, your temps are perfectly fine.

Anyone notice his CPU fan speed?
Go into the BIOS and disable the Q-fan controller.
Doing so should speed up the CPU fan and drop the CPU temp.
54C is too hot for me. It should be 20C lower in my opinion (idle of course).

Yes, back in Posts 3/4, fan speed was addressed.

Le sigh. Exactly - you're opinion. However, this is the real world, and a slightly warm CPU to begin with. You will *not* see 20*C on this CPU without some serious, expensive cooling. Not everything runs as cool as a new C2D and not everyone has a liquid nitrogen cooling setup...therefore, not everyone will have CPU's that are cool to the touch.

Ooops. I missed the fan thing but it still needs to be addressed.
By the way, I said 20C lower.
54C minus 20C= 34C

54C is fine under load but not at idle.
Yes, this is my opinion, but in the last 10 years of being part of the PC business world, I have seen some CPUs, with that type of idle temps, live very short lives.

And to think there are still high clock speed P4's running at ungodly temps and perfectly stable still in existence.

But whatever, eh? Moving on now...

seeing as the heat rating is 85C, adp, ur fine LOL!
