Computer Trouble

So I moving my diskdrive so I could have some room to hit some fans into my case, but I am having trouble getting it to work again.

If I have the drive connected to the IDE cable it will not get any power/open, but when I disconnect it, it opens just fine.

Whats going on here, also having same problem with my hard drive. 650w PSU and I didn't have this problem before.

If you are moving the drive to see it plugged in on the center connector instead of the end for an ide type drive you also have to move the drive's jumper from master to either the slave or cable select position. It sounds like you simply forgot to move the jumper found on the rear of the drive when switching positions on the cable.

The other thought would be a bad connector if you set the jumper correctly where a new cable would likely be needed. Typically ide drives have to be set according to the position. On some boards that will be cable select especially in prebuilt systems while custom cases will depend mostly on the board used since that will usually be the slave position for the center.

I have the Hard drive set to master and the disk drive as the slave. The Hard drive has the black end connected, and the gray/white it connected to the CD drive. I have a Hitachi deskstar and I have checked to see i have that set right. Still no luck.

It sounds like a wire or contact on the cable is the likely problem you are seeing there. The cables that come with drives are often "CHEAP"! I think you can follow that one easy enough. That's why I went for the dual nylon covered round cables since those can used from case to case and last.

i remember with a cheap ide cable once, i was pulling it the back of my hdd as normal, and all the wires disconnected from the blck bit that goes into the hdd, and to make it worse as i pulled it out the mobo it did the same that end too

Some are real bad! I've also run into cheap round cables as well as the flat ribbon type at times. I've used the Antec round cables on the last 4 builds and on the present one as well to see great results. The shipping costs are what will get you there however.

Just wondering, why would it cause power to not be received from the CD or Hard drive when I plug in the IDE cable?

Guess its my fault for not going SATA :D

Data would be the term as well as ide controller signals! The 12v power is seen on the power plug while the switching and control as well as data transfers are seen through the ide flat ribbon or round type cable. That handles signals coming to and from the board itself there.

The flat ribbon type get stiffened up and useless at times where the contacts get stretched as the cable itself becomes less flexible over a lengthy period of time as well as the temps inside a case they are exposed to. Lack of good air flow and cheap quality cables does well for that.

When first trying round cables I ran into some real winners! Eventually I spotted a pair of Antec round cables and bought those off of a retail rack. I still have the first pair in a drawer ready for use after about 4 1/2 years where I would have replaced flat ribbons for each new build if no problems were seen inbetween.

Eventually once you get a little more fussy about temps you'll like the thinner cables used on sata drives and regret ever being stuck with the wide flat ribbon type or trying to fold round cables?! GGrrrr...! in order to rearrange drives in a build. :P

There was a thread back then that provided information how to cut your ribbon cables and bunch them together. More space, better airflow.
