computer turning off

Hi, just trying to get a computer to work that I was hoping to put in my case when I get a new one and sell, but when I turn it on the fans come one and it lasts about 3 seconds and turns straight off, I have tried my psu in it and it does exactly the same thing so can't be that, there is no memory installed but if I recall on my old computer that just resulted in beeping, I have took off the heat sink and fan to make sure it is mounted properly and cleaned off and reapplied paste as it said somewhere it could be an overheating issue, does anyone have any idea's, the cpu being dodgy has also crossed my mind but I'm just hoping not

The memory will have to wait until the end of the month, I thought I had some spare but it turned out to be ddr1 which is annoying, I was going to get a new psu but glad I tested that now, cheers, I have never reset cmos so had to do a Google search, will give that a go when the kids are in bed, I just don't want to buy parts for it if it's beyond repair if I can help it, but I suppose I could start from scratch if I have to. The cpu says intel core 2 quad, not sure if that's any good or not as I have never used it, but not bad for free, if it's not dead. Just realised today that this is in the wrong section but I was knackered when I originally posted
 
Basically to reset the cmos you remove the cmos battery, remove power from power supply, push the power button on the case a few times to discharge power and then wait about 10 minutes and then reinsert everything and try booting.

thanks for the help, much appreciated, to be fair I probably wouldn't have thought to discharge the power, but then the computer has spent the last night in the cupboard so that should help hopefully, I will post again if it works so it might hopefully help anyone in the future who has this problem
 
Tried clearin cmos, this also didn't work, wish i had lots of spare components so i could try process of elimination
 
The only other possibilities are it needs memory installed or the motherboard or something else is shorting out against the case. Were standoffs used between motherboard and case?

Hmm, I would have to guess they will have been, as it looks to be a factory built computer, if it is the case I will know very soon as I will be ordering my new case for my main computer in a few days time, so as soon as that arrives, my current case will be going to this project, I will however have a look tommorow to make sure, got multiple projects involving fixing my laptop and netbook now as well
 
Got my new case today so I put the components from the failing computer into my old case, after process of elimination I managed to work out which one the power switch was so I connected that one, yet I still had the same problem, I also got a new cmos battery and tried that, but still no joy. I know for this case I will need a new psu anyway as the one I took out of this computer doesn't even reach the optical drive bays, but I don't think that is the problem, is it likely to be motherboard or cpu? as I can't think of anything else I haven't already tested
 
I think you should take it in to a computer repair shop and have them diagnose it for you, they will charge a standard fee for it.

I have never took anything to a repair shop yet and so far have always succeeded in the end, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I know everything but the motherboard and cpu is definately good, if I am going to spend money having someone diagnose it, and then spend more money on the part that's wrong, which really is narrowed down to 2 now, I might as well just replace them both, I am upgrading 2 more components in my computer soon, unfortunately none of them are the parts in question, but for the price they would charge me in a computer shop, I could probably replace both
