Hi, Im new to the Forum. I own a HP. DV5 series Laptop. It has the dule core processor's in it, with a ATI, Raidon 3800HD graphics card built in. also it has 3GB of mem. For about 1 year the computer worked fine, Got a little slow and Rebooted the system from the backup partition on the Hard Drive. worked great again, about 6 months ago it started turning its self off after 20 min of use...doesn't matter what you are doing. First the screen goes black and then the computer takes a min or two to Shut down maybe... If you turn it back on, the computer will go back to whatever you were doing. (right back to the exact web address you were visiting. Even if you were watching a youtube video or somthing it will go to the exact place it was when it shut its self down.) Im a future computer bench tech, but have just started taking classes so i dont know what to do. ANY THOUGHTS ARE GREATLY APRESHEATED...

Also it doen't matter if it is on battery or pluged into the wall....I have a cooling fan/thingy for the laptop to rest on and i always have used it... Over time it has caused some dust to form on a pannel that the fan sits right under. Could take pictures if needed.

the backup partition deal...explain that a bit more. Do you mean you used a restore point? or you had an entire backup that you reverted back to?

D: Is the backup Partition in witch you can restore your computer to factory settings. and it will erase everything in your C: and make the computer like the day you bought it. (Also the computer is running vista)forgot to mention in inital paragraph.

Ahh. Meh I personally. Wouldn't use that as a fix. I'd rather use the cd and reinstall the os. Regardless. If you haven't already, check that all the drivers to ensure that they are all installed and installed properly. If they are try reinstalling the os again. That's usually a cure all.

Try disabling hibernation if its enabled, i've never heard of hibernation doing this but I know it can cause problems.

smells like either its dirty or its power management needs a good kick in the pants back to the defaults...heres a how to:

http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/configuring-windows-vista’s-advanced-power-settings/

should give a brief idea on how to set up the power schemes on the laptop

but as was mentioned, hit the exhaust and intake holes of your laptop with some canned air, or compressed air, and you should be set...shes probably a little dusty, i clean mine about every month just to keep temperatures down, now that it is working at least, that everex is a pain in the ass, but when you get it configured, which takes alot of work, it works like a dream

Just an update. I took my computer to a repair guy and he took it apart and found out that the compound that they use in the factory is eather Crapaly applyed or just a crapy compound. So it was overheating and not dusty at all. Thanks for all the Help and support.

My guess would be the heat of the laptop dried out the thermal compound and is causing it to overheat.
