Computer turns on then off (repeatedly)

Tonight I've noticed that when I turn my computer on, it stays on for about 5 seconds just before the booting screen then switches off, but it stays stuck in a loop of turning on and off continuously until I turn the thing off at the plug. Any ideas on what's causing this?

Many thanks

So you don't even see the POST screen before Windows loads? Sounds like you have a hardware failure. Do you hear any beeps during this process?

I would start with taking all the RAM modules out and put them in one at a time to see if a module or bay failed.

Thanks. I'm popping over to my dad's place to pick up a screwdriver set later as I can't find one in my house. (Just shows how much DIY I do haha) So I will certainly give this a go and let you know what happens. :good:

Edit: no beeps as such just the usual boot up sounds that this particular computer normally makes, fans spinning etc. Nothing out of the ordinary though.

Normally you hear the single beep on boot up, but typically if there is a hardware failure you'll hear a set of long and short beeps.

With this partcular computer no, cant say I've ever noticed beeps on boot up but I know the beeps you mean as I have worked with several computers that do beep whilst booting up.

Also, I have taken out one of two of the 4GB Ram modules and computer now stays on however not getting any visual signal with the VGA cable plugged back in, is this normal?

Update: Ive plugged the other module back in and the computer now stays on but still not getting any display on my monitor with the vga plugged in. Is the video card f*cked or something? Is there anything I can try to fix this? :(

Edit: one thing to point out is I'm now getting a single beep sound when I turn the computer off at the switch which I'm sure I wasn't getting before

Quit the swearing.

Turn it off at the wall and PSU, remove the motherboard battery, hold down the poower button for 30 secs, reinstall motherboard battery, turn on.
