Computer Upgrade new cpu, MB, ram

Hello everyone,

I want to upgrade my computer. There for I found an upgrade kit.
The reason I want to upgrade is that I am getting my cpu bottlenecked in many modern games. Guild wars 2 for example or Cube World. Even minecraft. Causing me to have a low fps. Or can I tell my gpu to demand less of the cpu to balance it out?

The upgrade:
MB: GigaByte GA-B75M-D3V
CPU: Intel i5-3470
RAM: Corsair 2x4GB DDR3
I also will need a new cpu hs/cooler

My current specs are:
Windows Vista Home 64 bit (320GB) < Active HDD
Windows XP Professional (160GB)
4Gb Kingston RAM
OCZ 650W
Gigabyte EP45-DS3
MSI GTX 560 OC 1GB
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3,00GHz
Arctic Freezer Pro 7

I don't have the money for this yet. I was wondering if it is possible to install this for my computer. Maybe there are better components I could get?

Thank you!

Not a bad upgrade, but I would suggest going with Haswell, since it's newer :)
Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3: $80
Intel i5-4430 3.0GHz: $190 (or the i5-4570 3.2GHz @ $200 if you want a little more performance for $10 extra)

Since this will be a non-overclockable setup (I assume you already know this), the CPU won't be producing that much heat. That means you can get by with like a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo: $35 and set the CPU fan settings in the BIOS to quiet.

Please note that if you swap motherboard, you would have to reinstall your operating system. That goes for all Windows versions.
I would recommend that you upgrade your Vista to a 7 or 8 then. I don't know why you have dual boot with XP, but I guess you have your reasons. Both will have to be reinstalled though.

Here's a kit I found:
MB: MSI B85M-P33
CPU: i5-4430
RAM: 2x4GB Ballistix
And that cooler separatly.

This set of components is about 90 dollars cheaper than the set you suggested. I save 15 dollars on the MB and the rest because it's a bundle. Or should I just stick with the Gigabyte MB?

Do I keep all my personal data on the harddisks? Else I might go all out and save money for an SSD and bigger HDD as well...

I got the one with XP not as dual boot but as a second HDD :P

EDIT: What's the difference between µATX and ATX except the size?

I would go as far to say that the motherboard is too bad. It will fit, and will most likely work, but the power delivery and consistency is just better on better boards.
It's not worth saving $15 on the motherboard, but I'm not sure I understand it completely.
The bundle is the RAM and the CPU? Excluding the motherboard. If so, definitely spend the $15 more and get the better motherboard.
If it's the buy-a-CPU-and-get-8GB-RAM-bundle from Newegg, then definitely get the 4430+8GB and the Gigabyte mobo.

And no, all data will be deleted when you reinstall. So you should backup any needed files that you want to keep.
An SSD will for sure add to the performance of the PC. You won't see a difference in-game, but the desktop experience will be improved substantially.

It's all 3 of them MB+CPU+RAM and it'll be 90 dollars cheaper.
But, I'll go with the Gigabyte one. And I'll go with the i5-4570 which is only 4 dollars more than the i5-4430 and i5-3470 for me here.

Yea, the SSD would be for the windows installation and the desktop performance.

The 'µ' means micro, which I assume means mATX.
Not much except the size. With a smaller board, you often get less features of course. If you don't, it's a very good mATX board and often costs a bit more (They have to cram all the features in to a smaller PCB = more work)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX#Variants Here you can see the different sizes.

You haven't specified your case btw, you might be able to fit an ATX motherboard, which might save some money and give you a bit more features.
Upon investigation, your old motherboard is normal ATX.

You could look at the Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3: $90, which is the same board, just larger and with a little bit better power delivery and features (More PCI lanes, space for 2x the RAM and such)

Yea, I got a big case. Antec something. I wondered what the micro ATX had different and having more slots on the MB is much better and easier for expanding.

Thanks

Of note, if you're not overclocking you have zero need for wasting money on an aftermarket cooler. The one that comes with the CPU is designed to run it at stock clocks just fine.

Also as far as a cheaper motherboard is concerned, that's not a huge issue since once again he isn't overclocking. Power delivery at stock settings is a non issue really.

While you are right, I still personally wouldn't feel comfortable running anything higher than a Pentium G3430 in the B85M-P33, since it's the lowest of the lowest end. It would work, and it would boot and all that, but on long term, I wouldn't do it.
And the cooler thing was in terms of noise. The stock coolers aren't quiet by any stretch of the imagination, and they don't cool well either. He'll probably be seeing high 80's if not 90's with the stock cooler on synthetic benchmarks (not real world applications, but stuff like OCCT/Prime/AIDA64)
The CM Hyper 212 Evo would keep it in the 50-60's and be much more quiet.

Yea, I want the noise to be low and I don't want to burn the cpu of course.

I don't mind spending some more on a MB that's giving a bit of better ensurance that everything is good.
