Computer will not boot

Good morning to all,

Got a problem with my computer not booting, using XP Proffessional.
It was fine until I downloaded some microsoft updates, now when it starts to boot it says on screen ' Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I have tried to repair it with the windows disc and repair console but do not know if that is the way to go about it, if it is I do not know which repair console command it is.

Thanks in advance

David

EDIT: I just realized I'm not sure if sfc.exe is on recovery console, but I'd give it a whirl anyway.

I've seen this before. Just what it says, missing or corrupt files. I usually just format but try this:

Insert your cd do the press any key to boot thing...

rc2.jpg

wait for all the files to load and eventually you should get to a screen where you can press R for the recovery console

rc3.jpg

Then it'll ask for you to select your windows installation. There should only be one so press "1" an then enter

rc4.jpg

Then enter the admin password for that windows installation

rc5.jpg

Now you should be able to do some work. Type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes, of course) and press enter. This should repair any corrupt files and I believe add missing ones.

After this it probably wouldn't hurt to do a chkdsk but to just type "exit" to restart the computer and hopefully you'll be good to go

Good luck =)

And I know, images stolen from about
