computer won't boot. help?

I am very irritated with this computer! I thought i was just helping somebody out but it has turned into a huge pain!

i have power, the fan goes on. No posting, nothing else.

when i disconnect the hard drive but leave the power, it will turn on as well as the CD and DVD drives get power (at least they will eject when they otherwise wouldn't).... But still no boot; nothing comes up on the screen, no beeps. Not even the crackly "thinking computer" sound.

I have tried lots of things but feel like i just need some advice and start at the very beginning. Trouble-shooting tips, anyone?

When this computer got to my office it had worked the day before, but it was REALLY packed with dust and some (small amount) equipment cleaner had been sprayed inside. I am told that this should be fine once it dries, but am feeling nervous about it now.

Thanks anyone for the help.......

Did you make sure the monitor is hooked up? Do you even hear the HDD spinning up? Also, if you unhook the HDD, then you can't get the boot. But try a diff psu before saying the mobo died. Otherwise, is all that did nothing, brentduo is probably right, your mobo died

Yeah, the hard drive starts spinning if i disconnect it from the motherboard. And i have used couple power supply that are fine with other computers.
Motherboard dead, eh? Well that blows.... I don't suppose it will make a difference if i clean it out? Is there any other troubleshooting before i just call it dead?

oh, and yes; the monitor is plugged in. Like i said, it doesn't even boot. just the one fan starts and the HD spins (only if disconnected). That's it.

TRY pulling the cmos battery out for like 30 sec after unplugging it then putting it back in... mybe try a differant battery if that doesnt work :D

mobo might have crapped out

Yeah would have to agree there eventhough there's power getting through the motherboard will still power up and drives will still spin up.

If you have removed the motherboard make sure there is nothing shorting itself out by a motherboard screw for instance.
