computer won't boot up

So, my computer was working fine this morning, I came home from work, turned it on and got nothing but black screen, fans came on, but nothing else seemed to be working. pressing the reset button did nothing, i had to power down with the power button. i opened the case, double checked all connections. it seems to me that might be a motherboard issue, but if anyone has any other ideas i'd be extremely appreciative. specs are in signature. Thanks!

1) Reseat RAM

2) Make sure GFX and Motherboard pins are plugged in snug

3) Make sure that the motherboard is not shorting
 
When I tried unplugging Hdd, it started right up, i tried plugging it back in and it booted right up to windows, is there a good diagnostic program i can run now that it's going?

memtest86 froze about 15 seconds in, and the top half of the screen went black. also windows no longer recognizes either dvd drive.

I have tried with both sticks and with one stick at a time with the same result.

Sounds like some sticks are bad...
 
I got my new ram today, dropped 'em in and tried to run memtest86, and the same thing happened, ran for about 15 seconds, the top half of the screen turned black, and the bottom half froze. wth!
 
a bad psu doesnt mean the pc wont boot, sometimes doing something that takes a fair amount of power i.e. running mem test will cause a bad psu to fail.

Do you have onboard video? If so, I'd take out the GFX and try onboard. Use one stick if you have 2, and unplug everything unnecessary... (HDD, sound card, DVD player, ect)

Well, I'm not saying the it's PSU now, but that is definitely not true. A bad PSU will often still let the fans and drives spin up, but it won't be outputting enough the let the computer boot.
 
Im having the exact same problem, but i tried unplugging harddrive and it didnt change at all. I recently bought a new PSU, case, and CPU. My motherboard and video card are under 4 months old and my ram is only about 7 months old. Hard drive is relatively old though.

I put my ram, videocard and processor in another computer and it works fine, so i would suggest either the motherboard/harddrive have issues. Is it an IDE harddrive?

I can agree with you, but a bad PSU usually is blown. A underpowered PC is a different... It might start... and it might POST... and might not boot :)
