I got a computer from a friend that wasn't working. I opened it upand the harddrive wasn't screwed in so was moving about. I brought a new harddrive and upgraded ram. I have gone to boot it up and nothing. No lights, nothing. I have installed old ram back in and still nothing. What could be the problem. I can't imagine the powersupply would be dead after just upgrading parts as it was working when i tested old harddrive to see what it was doing.
Any ideas? Checked all wires and look ok. Everything plugged in.

I would triple check all the wires and make sure everything is plugged in.

If that doesn't work try another power supply in it. If another power supply doesn't work then the motherboard is likely dead.

I traded out a dead power supply once in a computer. It worked for a while and then the new power supply quit working.

As far as I know if a computer is not powering on it is one of these problems:

1) Something isn't plugged in right (this could also be the LEDs that lead from the power button to the motherboard)

2) The power supply is defective

3) The motherboard is dead

4) The power source (outlet) is defective
