Computer won't boot with mouse plugged in

I have found that a PS/2 mouse only works before you log on, and as soon as you log on, it stops working. I have tried 2 PS/2 mice. When I have a USB mouse plugged in it works fine, but only after you have booted, otherwise it freezes when detecting IDE drives. This is the same across Linux, Vista, 7 and XP. The PS/2 mouse works fine if the USB one is plugged in, but then the USB one doesn't work. Please help me solve this. It is confusing me.

I have a question. Why would it be detecting ide drives? Did you also add a HDD? Boot to safe mode and see what happens.
