Computer wont boot

My deskyop has been sitting for awhile, and i tried to start it up and it gets stuck at the loading screen. where it says press f1 for setup. but any keyboard i connect to it becomes unresponsive at this point. the keyboard initially flashes during bootup but then becomes unresponsive.

any ideas? i just want to boot it.
 
no it doesnt respond when i try to press f1 to enter setup or whatever.

i tried a button mashing tequnique during bootup once and it said "entering setup" instread of press f1 for setup, but didnt do anything
 
Try repeatedly pressing F10 during startup and see if that gets you to BIOS. If you are able to get into BIOS and change the boot order of the devices I would try creating a live boot cd from some form of Linux and see if it will boot to that via disk drive. If it does boot to that OS ok from the live disk then you may have a hard drive issue.

Can you hear the HDD spinning when you boot up the machine?
