computer won't recognise phone

i got a new phone today and i installed the disk that came with it. when i plugged the phone into the pc with the usb cable and hit connect on the program it says: "can't connect with phone! there is no device available in the hardware list. check it." what should i do?

Did the cable come with the phone(meaning in the box) What kind of phone is it? What software are you using?

My first thought, which could be totally wrong as I don't even know what you're trying to do with the phone! But my last phone with a cable ran a USB to serial converter(one was in the middle of the cable) So, it wasn't true USB and you had to configure the seial port and all... I didn't know if you had some setting missing like that as well, or the wrong cable.
 
yeah the cable is the one that came in the box with the phone. the phone is a ZTE F850 and the software that i installed is called "Join Me"

oh i just thought of another thing, when the install new hardware box popped open and i hit the disk option, it started searching and then came up with an error saying: "the software you are installing for this hardware has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows XP"... and then it had this longer spiel about how it could impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system immediately or in the future if you choose to go ahead and install the software anyway.

Sorry man but I can't be of much help. I looked around on google a bit and I couldn't find hardly anything on that model of phone. Are you sure that's the correct model?
 
i had a read of the manual today and it sounds like that the reason the computer won't recognise the phone is because the hardware isn't installed.

that error message to do with the windows logo testing i posted about above, does it sound serious? like its a brand new phone and software should i just go ahead and install the hardware?
