So i just put together my new computer and i have the primary ide cable going into the cd/dvd rom and then i have the 2nd one going into my harddrive. My computer wont recognize anything thats in the 2nd ide part. How can i fix this?
it only recognizes whatever is on the first one. Cause when i just hook up the hard drive or when i just hook up the cd drive it works but i cant have both on the same cable
can i have a hard drive and cd/dvd rom on the same cable?
No I don't think you can do that, nor do I think they make cables that do that. Check your BIOS to see if the computer recognizes the hard drive but doesn't boot it up on startup.
i have one in the cd drive and one in the hard drive going into the one slot on the motherboard. i only have one spot on my motherboard the ide cable, does that mean that i have to use a sata hard drive?
you can't run a cd/dvd drive on the same IDE port as your HDD. if you only have one IDE port on your motherboard, you will have to get a SATA HDD or SATA CD/DVD drive. Id recommend that your get a SATA HDD and SATA DVD drive, for the simple fact that SATA of so much faster than IDE.
Oh, I didn't know you were running IDE. Yeah definitely look into getting SATA drives. Plus the SATA cables don't fill up your entire computer like the IDE cables do. =P
Yes you can. I've done it, as a matter of fact I have my DVD set up as master and HD as slave right now, the slave HD's got my Linux installation on it and it works fine.
Have you checked all the jumper settings? Do you have a 4-wire or 80-wire IDE cable? The older 40-wire cables won't work properly if you're using Cable Select, you have to set master and slave manually, which you should try out even if you're sure you have a 80-wire cable.
