Computer wont start with extra RAM

Im already running 1gig of ram in my pc, but I have the old 256 doing nothing. So I decided to put it in with the other gig. But when I turn the PC on it wont boot up. It just beeps several times and the screen wont even come on. Any ideas?

It would help if you gave us more info on the moboand ram. I am guessing that the ram isnt compatible Take out the new ram and it should start up, if not, then you are in trouble.

I took the 256ram back out and it starts fine with the 1gig still in there. The weird thing is that the 256ram was in there by itself before I installed the 1gig.

what are the frequencies? chances are the 256 is 100 or 133 mhz, while the gig is 200. they arent going to run together because theres too much of a difference and the computer recognizes there would be a stability issue.

what is the maximum amount of memory you can have? is it possibel the maximum supported memory is 1gb?

take out the gig and put in the 256 by itself and see if it boots. if it does, then your system will probally only support 1 gig
