I recently decided to upgrade the memory in two computers I have, but the memory sticks did not fit into the slots. I decided not to instal into either but when upon starting the computers, 1 will start and but hard drive light appears to be doing nothing and the 2nd the XP start up screen runs and when it get to before the users page it stays grey and again the hard drive appears to do nothing. The 2nd however I am able to start in safe mode/safe mode with networking hence how I am able to be on here.
Please please what have I done, how can I repair the damage I have obviously done.
Both machines running on XP.
Repair disk is asking for administrator password which I believe has not been set.

Update

The 2nd one will now continue to start up if I leave it for about 30 minutes to do it's own thing, does anyone have any suggestions please!!!!

Before your decision to upgrade the RAM, the computers worked correct? So, even though you did not insert the new RAM, something must have changed.

Did you unseat any of the RAM that was already in the computer? If you did then when you put the RAM back in the computer, did you place it in the same slot? The order and placement of the RAM may be important.

Consider opening the case again and taking a peek. See if anything stands out and you remember anything you may have changed before. There is little to work with right now in troubleshooting your problem. There are a countless number of things that can cause the symptoms you describe.

Hi yes both computers were working fine however a little slow, memory upgrade was suggested therefore why I tried the replacement, the memory sticks appear all fine and were put back in the same slots.
