The other day i went to turn my computer on and it didn't turn over, it was fine before and i didn't download anything or install any new hardware/software. I never had this problem before and im not sure where to start the diagnostics, could it be a cooked cpu, ram, motherboard, PSU, or something as simple as a bad power button? I don't know. The computer is MDG and is about 4 years old now but has always worked perfectly. Anyways, when i press power on the tower i can see the cpu cooling fan turn about 1/2 a revolution then stop and nothing else happens, nothing on the monitor, no noise, nothing. I took the side of the case off and i can see a small green light illuminated on the motherboard so i think it's getting power, i also try'd to reset the CMOS and still nothing. Can someone please help me out here?

Specs,
Intel D945GTP
Intel Pentium 4 524, 3.07GHz
GeForce 8500GT
2 Gigs of ram
420w PSU.
250G 7200rpm
Windows XP Pro

Okay, i don't have a spare PSU, but if i can get my hands on one i will give that a try. Any other ideas?

cpu cooling fan turn about 1/2 a revolution then stop and nothing else happens...I think your PSU died???

Whatever you do, don't try turning it on again. PSUs are like really angry little boys...when they refuse to work, they stop, and if you keep trying to get him to work, he'll explode:)

concorde, thanks for the heads up, i wouldn't want him to explode so i'll leave him alone for now anyway. :D

I might have another power supply just to try, but it's from and old (about 10 years) compact presario and it's only 250w if i remember correctly. If i remove the 8500GT and hook up to onboard would the donar psu even be compatible with my machine or have enough juice to fire it up?

Just plug in the PSU into the mobo socket/s, dont bother pluggin in the HDD, CDROM, etc...

See what happens, if it turns on and posts you know the old PSU is faulty.

I remember once it happened to me.
At that time I just unpluged and repluged my power cable , and the problem solved.
Try it.

I try'd a new PSU and still no power. The suspect psu, and the new psu both work on a different desktop. Any ideas?
