Computer Wont Turn On

ok Last night i turned off my PC because the fans are loud and i can't sleep. this morning, i wake up and press the power button on my PC. nothing happens, i try again, nothing. the power switch isnt the cause, because a screwdriver to the power jumper does nothing also. the motherboard seems to have power, as the power LED is on. I've switched the ram out thoroughly, to no success. Ideas? im fresh out of thermal paste or i would reseat the processor. the video card isn't the problem either. so an imaginary cord or short is making problems, or i have a bad mobo/cpu/psu.

Well, does it do anything at all when you press the on button besides motherboard light coming on? I would think the PSU went bad, but if you say motherboard is getting power then it's probably not that. Try hooking something like a case fan or some hardware straight up to the PSU to test it.

I mean it's hard to say what's wrong. For instance, my computer's hardware would power on, but the screen stayed blank because my RAM went bad some how. So I don't think it's your RAM.

I need to know if anything powers on when you press the on button? you said the motherboard had a light that was on so i'm confused :P

If nothing happens at all when you press the on button and the motherboard has power then i'd say it's fried, but i'm no expert but i'll get information and help as much as I can. :)

there is a "power ready" led on the motherboard that shows a power supply is hooked up and providing power, at least to the led. (doesnt mean the psu is completely stable or working)

completely randomly, as i was taking unnecessary parts off the computer and trying to start it, a shitload of white sparks and smoke came out of the power supply. it no longer activates the motherboard power led.

(so $144 down already  )

now im just trying to find out if it took my processor and motherboard with it, i pray that it didnt. i assume it's safe to try another power supply? im typing this from a friends pc, that im about to take the psu from.

and no, nothing whatsoever happened when i pressed the button before. now nothing REALLY happens lol.

Try a test PSU that is known good.

And it's always best to unhook the PSU while removing components.. shit happens though.

I highly doubt it took the CPU, however it is possible it took the mobo.

Let us know what you find out with a different PSU.

damage report:
PSU: total loss
Motherboard: total loss
my RAID array: total loss

video card, the actual hard drives, and the processor survived the devastation.

That really does suck dude. Hopefully it wont happen to you again after you get everything fixed. :)

i know right! but it opened up my path for an easy upgrade though. im buying a corsair 650w psu, a gigabyte p55 mobo, and an intel i5 750. with 4gb of 1600mhz ram.

hope it doesnt happen again! lol.

It shouldn't. Although there is a logical explanation.. I'd like to find out why it did that. (I'm sure you would too lol).
lol yeah it's an excuse to go buy a better computer! :D

Might want to look into a UPS for your rig as well. We sell those non-stop at work, can't beat their warranty.

They warranty anything connected to them up to $750,000 of value. Really can't go wrong for an extra hundred bucks to know your stuff is safe..

The fans caught my attention, overheat/short on the motherboard, causing the board to melt, then the power supply tries to keep up and in turn overheats and the wires melt.

yeah but there were no melted wires :/ but thanks.

i've attributed the failure to a series of voltage spikes that i just made up. ;)
