Computer Work Stations

I have been setting up a huge network for a local church/school. Right now they use all DELL there are 5 pcs setup a long with the IBM server I installed. These dells are about 3-4 years old. We have been replacing hard drives and power supply's left and right. Now they seam stable but are just running crappy. I reloaded every pc and it helped a little but not to what it should be. Anyway, We are looking in to buying 5 new workstations, These computers would be a member of a domain and we would like windows xp pro not vista. So they dont need to be top end pcs. We have a gateway business account witch we can purchase though and get a discount. Also we have one with HP. We do not want to get dells again, We are looking t word gateway and HP, But id like your opinion instead. We are thinking 5-7 new pcs, The old dells are going in the school for the kids to use once we reinstall windows as they dont have any pcs at all now to use. By the end of this upgrade there will be a total of 30 plus computers with in the next year total that I will have to manage. The kids have there own user account witch can work on any pc in the building but they are monitored and very limited on what they can do, So they dont need power ful pcs at all. Just something to use word on and access the internet. Thats about it...

Anyway, Let me know what you think I should purchase regarding workstations. We dont want to build them, Then we need to buy license rights for each OS on top of the pc parts... Its just better off getting one from a company ( I know how to clean up the crap that comes on them lol ) anyway, Post what you think... Thanks in advance! :)

Have you had other problems with Dell in the past?

You should be able to get XP Downgrade packs with the new workstations no matter who you order from. It will most likely cost you extra. Or you can just purchase a pack of OEM XP Pro licenses.

The last few Dell workstations I bought were purchased with Vista Business and the XP Pro downgrade already installed. So, we could go either way. They work fine.

At my work we support about 800ish users and all the PCs/laptops are Dells. The Dell Optiplex PCs are designed for business use and are very reliable. We get a Vista Business licence with every PC but Dell load our XP Pro image onto each PC. We have a volume XP licence.

I would recommend Dell. Why do you want to avoid them?

Or, as an option, you could hire a pro in your area who would get everything going for you seamlessly.

I personally dont like dell... but you shouldn't have functionality problems with them... you might of had a bad batch. Out of the 2 brands you mentioned, i would DEFINITELY go with HP... seeing as though Gateway/MPC is bankrupt ;)

+1... By the way.... 5pc's is not a "Huge" network, thats barely a small network, and even if you would go with "30+ pc's" its still a small network. Dell workstations are fine for normal usage, but another thing.. depending on what the usage is, is to take a look at nettops as they consume very little power, and are fine for standard usage such as web browsing, word processing, etc.

Yeah, i burst his bubble because i hear about his "huge network" and "i hate dell" messages on msn almost daily...lol.

lol, You will hear me say I hate dell because I do. Everyone I know and each time I have worked with dell nothing but problems. Dell is out of the question, Its between Gateway and HP now. Any other thoughts?

Dude, Gateway is ran by ACER. There will always be some support. They have to honor it.
Knowing you and your hardheadedness:P..... Just saying that it is a viable future that gateway could cease to exist.

IBM.... What about IBM workstations? Any Idea?

Are you thinking of the thinkcentre line of desktops? As those are no longer produced by IBM, Lenovo bought out IBM's PC division in 2005. Also... you seriously dont need to double post.

Just go to Best Buy and get the cheap $400 desktops that come with 20" LCD
monitors, mouse, and keyboard. They include a Windows license key.

Can't do that. They need to be Windows XP Pro. We have a server and need to connect it to the domain.

Lenovo, We have been getting some of them in at work as well as HP and Gateway to replace the DELLS that we currently have. Since at work they have been doing this, We have had less problems with the newer systems. How much would Lenovo run? I would highley consider them as well as HP and Gateway.
