Well, Im hoping to buy a new computer soon and can get it a lot cheaper if i dont get a monitor. I want to use my old crt monitor (5-7 yrs old).

But I'm wondering...how far have monitors come, a new crt isnt any (or too much) better than mine is it? If so, in what way(s).

19inch lcds are extremely cheap now, they consume about 1/5 the power, so it will pay for itself, plus you get sharper image and more desk space, you cant justify not buying one at the price theyre at :D

yes, but they also have a native resolution, where as crt's dont.

Someone correct me on this if i'm wrong...if you try to play a game/anything else at a higher res. than the native res. of the screen...it will look horrible.

Is this true?

Nope, not true. Any reason to why you would think that?

you cant go higher than native res on lcd's u can go lower tho

honestly if ur not a graphic freak u will not notice.

settings on the game will matter much more

nothing but maxed settings for me :D

Hmm...I might have to add one then..(its $180 to add a 19inch analog flat panel)

CRTS usually have better picture. Thats just a general rule. They usually have better contrast (LCDs are too bright) and sharper. They also have better color. However, LCDs are sexy slim so consume less space and weigh a LOT less, as well as use 1/5th the power. If you're satisfied with your monitor, stick with it. No need to upgrade unless you're looking for a flat panel solution or need a larger size. Your CRT will do just fine.

Unless you're a super photo-editing-as-your-business kind of person, you'd want a CRT for better color reproduction. If you're a normal person, get an LCD. (LCD's don't have bad color reproduction. Rather, they're good. CRT's are just better at that aspect.)

My new ViewSonic monitor smashes my old ProView LCD in every aspect, and whats more, LCD's don't damage my eyes. When I was more of a nipper both of our computers (Mine was a 400MHz Celeron!) had CRT's, and so did school. I used these every day and my vision got worse very quickly, however, since we now use only LCD's for monitors at home and I only use CRT's rarely at school, my eyes are starting to get a grip on things and repair themselves. The same applies for my uncle who used a CRT at work.

I have a couple CRT's laying around. No one wants them. We use them as door props and something to kick our feet up on occasionally.

Bleh, resolution problems with LCDs you say?
I have a 15" IBM piece of crap upstairs, and it can't go above 640x480 res :p

Talk about a disaster :[
But I can go 1650x1050 when I turn my TV on to Video mode for the cpu -.-
Just the monitor will look super funky, lol.

Wow, when i compare my 22" CRT and my 19'' LCD i prefer my big fat CRT moniter.

the lcd moniter is way to bright and the crt is alot clearer

yea i like either, and currently my crt is 19' and thats plenty big enough and its clear, it may take up a bit more space, but usin it saves me a couple hundred dollars, so im content with my crt for now
