What do you guys think of this computer for my roomate. He doesn't want to spend much money at all, but needs everything but a mouse :P No gamming, but I wanted to be sure he at least could upgrade to a decent video card later on... RAM, I was looking for 256x2, but I couldn't find any on newegg!

Hmm...those are slower than I realized. I should of researched them a bit more. I might revise...

Wait wait...that wouldn't work anyway! Read all the specs above, we need everything but the mouse(IE monitor, keyboard and speakers)
 
Yea I realized that. It would be a bit more expensive, but having an AM2 board that overclocks quite well in addition to the A64 over the Celeron, I would consider it worth it.

You might want to consider 1x512MB. Given that you've chosen one of the cheapest processors available, this obviously isn't a high performance system, and sacrificing dual channel abilities (and 512MB) in order to save $40 may be appealing. Naturally, you could always upgrade in the future.

A case with an included PSU would allow you to shave a few dollars off as well. Something like this does not have high power requirements!
 
I wouldn't go with a Celeron. With AMD's low prices, you should look into their Sempron or Athlon 64 line.
 
Jet - Well the cheapest AMD's I could find were still about twice as much as the Celeron... And I really didn't even look into the AM2 or the 754...

ceewi1 - I've never compared duel channel to not, so I don't know the difference in performace. I think he was rather pleased with the idea of having 1G... As for the PSU, I wanted something semi-capable of new graphics cards should he decide to upgrade...

Omega - As mentioned above, AMD's are much more expensive. I wanted to go with a Sempron, but I couldn't find one nearly as cheap.

I found this Socket AM2 Sempron for $55 not much more then the Celeron and is a much better processor and has free shipping.

its the smarter choice because then he can upgrade the cpu if he wanted to the dual cores if he ever got into gaming for example.
