Concerns about my motherboard!

Hi guys

I signed up on here to ask this question. Can burn smell due to not fully inserting the RAM into the dimm slot ruin a motherboard or just the ram?

My motherboard is the ASUS P7P55D-E Pro and my RAM is the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB).

Basically I have inserted RAM countless time so this was a careless accident. Basically the RAM was not fully inserted in so it look like a sea-saw (one side in and the other out) but it click with the holder and just second after I turn it on I smell a burning smell and quickly turn off my computer. I took out my ram and was so worry that my motherboard was destroy.

I try other RAM and surprisingly my motherboard memory OK light turn off (meaning everything is working). I don't know if the mobo is damage or not or if it affect other area of the mobo like the GPU?

I did a clean reinstall of window 7 and I just installed Microsoft office 2007 and when I open any of my document, nothing show up? I can't attach files because nothing show up?
- Could this be due to the mobo?


If you guys can reply to me as soon as you can I would really appreciated it. I take great care of my custom PC (2009) but accident do happen.

Everything work. Microsoft work - turn out it was save in the wrong location.


However what would happen if I took out the ram and install better ram in duel channel instead of single channel? Will all the dimm RAM slot work?

I can't get over that burning smell near the RAM location of the motherboard. However after I turn off the pc, the smell went away really quick unlike other cases I have read about.

I am paranoid, I worry that everything work now but there is internal damage inside the motherboard and eventually it will give out and everything will be slower or not register?

I am also not sure if my old RAM is damage or not, there is no burn or scratch or melt mark on the RAM. It look like in perfect condition. Do you think it would be too risky to insert the old rams in again, I worry that due to its age that I didn't fully inserted the RAM in like I did with the other ram?

If you are still getting the smell then you should take it in and have it looked at. Thats all I can tell you. Ram can look perfectly fine but not work.

The smell lasted for a few second. Once I turn off my computer it was gone.

Could I still re-install those RAM again or would it be too risky to know for sure if the RAM is damage or not?

I can't tell you that. I don't have your ram or motherboard sitting in front of me. It's not a simple yes or no answer. I would test the ram in a motherboard you don't care about first. I told you before you may have to take it in and have someone look at it.

thehotsung8701, please post pictures of the board and ram. :)
 
Probably what happen, since he didnt have one side snapped all the way in. The corner pins on the stick and the boards contacts were a fraction away or didn't have full contact. Got a little spark action. Can slightly burn/discolor the pin or contact, which usually will be ok. If it stays on too long can even burn through the pin or contact, bad. A cross spark can be bad too, can even burn out the board or memory stick.

Since the board works with another memory stick, I would say its ok. Just look at all the pins on the memory stick for burn marks. If not or just slightly discolored it might be ok. But like johnb35 said, I would just try it in a board that you don't care about.
