I need help which antivirus is better for standalone pc get safe in internet

norton, antivir, macafee, avast, AVG, nod32

avast appears to be messing up all my games during play i had to disable all the shields in order to get rid of the problem or else it will give me symptoms similar to a fried video card.

I've tried Avast here and ended up having to remove it. AVG has been reliable over a long period of time. The important to remember regardless of which one is installed and run on your system is getting familiar with a lengthy list of other programs since you won't be able to find one that will be 100% effective 100% of the time. None in the list there represents a complete safeguard. AVG is simply preferred here due to it specifying where things are located even if it is unable to remove or supress them.

One other thing to note is that antivirus programs usually have to be disabled when running various pc games to avoid problems.

Avast! coupled with Prevx1 is definitely your best bet, but if you are certain you need to go another route, something I am not convinced of, then NOD32 is your next best bet, followed by AVG.

AVG Free, had it since '04 works great..

AVG has always held up it's end here. Another one that comes with some good references is Antivir. You can try out the latest free version at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html I'll still be running AVG however. On one system I let one I-Worm go to see how well it dud. It pointed out the exact locations for each file effected. It was a piece of cake to clean that off afterwards. :D

The only one in that list that isn't total crap is AVG, but I would still vote for Avast. I use AntiVir, and it is the most annoying thing i have ever seen. Constant popups.

Well I interpreted the question as the best anti-virus, not which one I use or which is the best overall.

IMO Norton protects the best, however, I don't use it unless it is on a 'work' computer.

Avg its what i was recommended on here so thats what ive stuck with and so far dont think ive had any real problems! touch wood though!!!

The reason you would see so many popups is due to the gimic of adding adwares into freewares. When you think you have something free that's their opening for free advertising. And everyone gets "something"?

Norton and McAFee reach to the bottom when compared to others. Not running it on "your own" system says something to that effect. :P

It may since they usually pack a little more and even things that work in the pro versions over those intended for the home user. Remember companies are out to sell you something not the other way around. They don't you protected from their adwares and spybots too well. You wouldn't be stuck with their popup ads if you did. :P

I use AVG for temporary stupidity protection but my antivirus of choice is me + regedit + delete key :D

So far the only thing I've gotten was blaster and that was < 1 second after connecting to the internet to update windows after an install to XP pre SP1.

I left one I-Worm go on purpose to see what AVG would do. It accurately pointed out the files that had been changed. While an overwrite took care of the one system file infected another unrelated being stored on the drive was the one single casualty. It had to be recycled. not you! :( And AVG has been kicking whatever since. :D
