confused about Windows 8 tablets

Can somebody give me an idea of what to expect from Windows 8 tablets? All the information out there seems kind of confusing, especially difference between Windows 8 and RT and Surface. Will the standard version of Windows 8 (not RT) be used on slate tablets? Also, is the Surface tablet going to be a slate tablet?

I wouldnt expect too much from any Microsoft product other than an operating system. When they debut Windows 8 for tablets, I personally thought it was stupid. I prefer Android myself.

I wouldnt get a windows tablet. I try to stay as far away from windows as I can. And since they rule the desktop world, I am stuck with them on my PC. But my phone and my tablet are my escape :)

And who knows, we may be able to see a full on Android operating system for PC to compete with Windows. Seeing as how much Android has grown in the past few years, now having their own gaming console and all...

I'm kind of stuck with Windows because the only way I can operate a computer is by voice. I think the Windows speech recognition would work great on tablet, judging from my experience with using it on my desktop. iPads and android tablets do not offer the kinds of SR programs I need, which is basically a program that starts immediately upon booting up, and every major function can be performed by voice commands. Windows 7 tablets can do what I need, but I just wanted to see if it would be worth it to wait for Windows 8.

I think windows 8 is a bad OS, it runs good on the laptop I use to have but it looks and runs a lot like Windows 7 mobile and it is the worst selling mobile OS on the market so I am unsure why M$ would build there new desktop to look like it.

I am lucky, I have been able to get away with Ubuntu and plan on buying a nexus 7 tablet next month and from what jelly bean is getting closer to being a competitive OS with Windows.

Oh I do pray for the day we see Android OS on desktop computers. I think it would be alot better. As the games I have seen for Android are really good and I think we get better optimized games for desktops if they used Android which is a light operating system compared to chunky overweight windows.

I hate to break it to you but I do not think it will ever make it to the desktop, every time I walk into a electronic store the laptop and desktop section it continues to get smaller while the tablet sections get bigger. Lets face it, with the the external key boards and mini hdmi ports they are almost as versatile as a laptop and from what I have seen the integra quad cpu do in the $2-300 tablets it out performs laptops in the $6-800 range.

I do not know if I am fully ready for tablets to take over but I guess I will find out when I order my nexus and see how much I still use my laptop.

Since tablets are not as higher spec as a laptop or a desktop, RT is a "dumbed down" version if you like... I run Windows 8 RP, and it runs like a dream on my laptop, but for a tablet, there is less room for technology, so it isn't as powerful... so if I am right here... You should be able to run RT on a computer but not 8 on a tablet... if it is the i386 stuff...

Windows 8 is a good os... its more convinient. All that is different is the metro start menu for god sake! That is easier to organize!!! Oh... and they have updated the cursor animation slightly... but everything is still compatible. It starts quicker, it runs more efficiently... my laptop doesn't overheat with this like it did 7.

As I have said it runs good but the metro UI is horrible especially on a laptop and judging by how well Windows mobile has been doing on the market the world agree metro sucks.

I believe the same old rule applies, there are some that use Windows because they like it which all the power to them but many use Windows because that is all they know and people are comfortable with it. So what happens when you get average joe walking in and he sees windows 8 for the first time? Simple, chances are that person will stick with what is comfortable to them which will be either a Android or iOS device because for about 90% of users there is a app for what they want to do.

It isnt horrible on a laptop? You can basically just swipe if you have a multitap device. You can just drag your cursor off screen in metro in the direction that you want and it scrolls that way. Just fiddle with it.

I started this thread not wanting to find out how bad Windows is for tablets. This is what I'm stuck with because I need total voice control of my OS and applications. Android cannot do what I need otherwise I would consider it. I just need to know if a tablet running either Windows RT or 8 would give me equivalent performance for speech recognition and possibly more efficient power consumption as compared with Windows 7.

I would not know. If there is a tablet RP out there, run it in a virtual machine..

Windows 8 comes preinstalled with Hyper V ^.^

I cant see why it wouldn't work though.

I don't know what you mean by RP. I'm talking about Windows RT, the Windows 8 version designed specifically for tablets. I want to know if those tablets will likely be more efficient with power consumption as well as perform six recognition decently. I could go ahead and get a Windows 7 tablet right now, but I'm willing to wait if the new tablets will be significantly better.

*RT.

I got confused because there is 8 RP, which is the Evaluation copy I run, which will change over to 8 Pro, and 8 RT which is the apparently unreleased tablet os :)
